2011 X5 xDrive i35d -- Quick questions that need feedback please!

Hey all,

Been searching all over the forums for answers as I'm new to the BMW world so please bare with me

I'm in the market for a new SUV and been test drove Audi Q7, Acura MDX, Lexus RX350, and BMW X5 i35d. At first I was leaning towards the Q7 but after test driving the X5 I fell in love with it. Seriously a fun ride and such a different beast all together. To compare with Lexus Rx350 its day and night.

Anyway, the feeling I've held for many years is that BMW's reliability is poor. This is based on friends/family who've owned BMWs and complained about constant shop repairs. Of course consumer report also gives it a poor rating.

However, the general feel I get from researching the forums is that people love their BMWs and would sacrifice some reliability for a much more satisfying ride. Some other member (chuck---something) also made a great point that Lexus, although most reliable, produces basically the same product for the past 10 years. So reliability is great but lacking any excitement .. So true. (currently own a 2000 RX300)

So I'm interested in the 2011 BMW X5 i35d. The monstrous torque and better gas mileage won me over.

Questions though
1) I plan to pay cash 100% when buying the car. Does the eco credit still apply? If so how much? 3500 or 4500? I've seen both figures floating around. (I know that the $1800 federal tax credit ended Dec 2010 )

2) The diesel X5 was introduced in 2009. Is there any additional risk with the diesel engine as opposed to the gas engine?

I understand there will be issues with BMW. It's not a matter of IF ... but rather WHEN. But I'm worried if I will need to take the car into the dealership every other month, you know? ...

Any feedback from your BMW ownership experience is appreciated it!

2. No.

I have a 2009 diesel, and the car has done 37,500 miles. Never had a issue with the engine.

I have had issues with the battery, idrive, parking brake and the steering wheel heater. These problems are not unique to the diesel though.

Generally speaking, I would say from a reliability point of view, this x5 is the same as other BMWs I've had. I think the worst BMW I had for reliability issues was the E92 M3 with that dreadful DCT gearbox.

Thanks for the feedback ! I've never owned a BMW before so I'm not sure exactly what to expect. But i think the consensus is that people who've owned BMW's before would buy another one again

I had a 2000 rx as well. Good to hear you still have it. We got rid of ours too early. That thing was bullet proof.

We recently got an x5d. And like you looked at the Audi and Acura. The Audi is a boat. Didn't like it one bit. I liked the MDX a lot. But like you after I drove the x5...game over.

Get the x5 you won't regret it!

This engine has been in service in other parts of the world much long than North America. A diesel engine also tends to last longer than a gas engine...

I have a 2011 X5 35d and love it. I average 24 MPG with great power. Can't wait until ESS finishes a tune for it.

My 2011 Diesel is my second favorite BMW of em all...Trailing only the E46 M3 Cabriolet (which I miss everyday). It's a torque monster and great ed driver.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I've made up my mind on the build I wanted which includes many packages and options. Most likely the dealerships around me will not have what I'm looking for in stock.

I ordered the consumer report BMW X5 details and the eco-credit incentive said it expires 06/30/2011. Does anyone know if i order the X5, will the eco-credit be void if it takes a few weeks till the vehicle is ready?

I'm being quoted $56,584 not including tax, tag, title, or dealer document fees ($599, wow !). Out the door price is $61,116. Good deal?

Here is the build :
2011 X5 i35d.
Alpine white exterior with black perforated Nevada leather interior
· Premium package
· Technology package
· Active ventilated seat package
· Rear climate package
· Running boards
· iPod and USB adapter option
· Comfort access keyless entry

If you order the car before June 30 the Eco credit will apply. After all they are quoting you the deal based on this so they are committed.

What is the MSRP after all options. We paid 56200 for a x5d at 63800 MSRP. I think our deal was fair but probably could have done a little better based on what I have read on this forum.

Come prepared to argue loan rates as we if you are financing. It's best to have a Locked in rate with a bank beforehand so you have some leverage. Our dealer went as low as 2.2% after we told them our bank offered 2.9 on a 5 year term. We have since (2 months later) refied down to 1.99 with our bank.

We're purchasing this car upfront so no financing needed. I just checked the MSRP $64,075 vs Invoice $56,584. It looks like I can push a lil lower based on your numbers. I'll keep that in mind =)

Bought a 2011 X5 D, sport package, 20" rims, fully loaded in Jan. Took PC Delivery on it. Awesome car/truck/sav/whatever. Get the D and don't look back. Drivers and instructors at PC said 'they should only sell a D in these X5's" Torque and road manners are amazing. Even got caught in an ice/snow storm on the way home to Texas and it was amazing.
