2010 BMW X5 Twin Turbo undressed

Source:Jalopnik

Someone must have gotten lazy at the Nordschleife and didn't remember to cover up the new nose on the twin-turbocharged V8-powered 2010 BMW X5. In this latest round of spy shots from the folks at KGP, we can clearly see the dramatic, M3-inspired front air dam and big new wheels to match the upgraded styling. This marks the second application for the twin-turbo eight cylinder which debuted in the BMW X6, and in the X5 it will be making 408 HP and providing a 0-60 time of just 5.5 seconds. The one thing it won't be doing is wearing the "M" badge.

BMW's high-performance-but-not-quite-M-worthy X5 prototype has now shown more of its face, free from its normal frontal camouflage. The once-mysterious X5 program has now become much clearer with today's photos, and some earlier engine shots revealing what appears to be a twin-turbocharged V8.

The hot X5's front fascia uses all of the cues consistent with BMW's Motorsport division, but sources report that an M-badged X5 is not in the cards — the X5's weight, height, and packaging are just too compromised for a proper M-car. But by the looks and sounds of this turbocharged V8 model as it circled the 'Ring, it will certainly give the top Porsche Cayenne some serious competition.

I wonder if it will even go on sale with gas prices the way they are.

BMW needs to up its CAFE standards and this won't cut it.

As it is X5's will be discounted by $5-$10k if they are not already.

How don't see BMW surviving selling big engines except in speciality cars like the M1/5/6.

You do know your X6 is built on the X5 chassis and weighs 5000 lbs. The X5 will carry the same powerplant options as the X6, including the V8TT.

You bought a car/suv that is 5000 lbs and sucks the same amount of gas.

BMW designed the X6/powerplants a couple years ago before the gas issue.

I can't imagine them planning to put bigger engines in cars when the industry is quickly changing course.

The plan is according to the Roundel article, is that BMW will no longer offer V8/10/12's within a few short years. They will leverage turbo power on 4 and 6 cyl engines.

My neighbor has an X5 with a V8, it weighs 500lbs more than an X6 3.5.

He gets 12-17MPG

My X6 gets 16-22MPG easy.

They may weigh close to the same, but my MPG is 20-30% city/hwy. That is significant but still not great.

Since BMW is a nimble company that can adapt to change quickly, I just expected them to be more agressive in reversing course and cutting out large engines that will not sell well.

To be honest...alot of people i know buying $70,000 + vehicles won't be concerned with gas prices, Big V8 engined vehicles still sell in europe despite their astronomical petrol prices, albeit they sell alot less...

And im sure that this new 4.4 ltr turbo V8 will be both more economical and way more powerful. I mean its .4 of a liter smaller in displacement plus twin turbo chargers and more advanced software.

And whats the big deal if gas goes up 2 bucks? Gas going from $5 to $7 dollars a gallon only adds about $1000 dollars to my yearly fuel prices for my 12 gallon ///M Coupe with about 4 fillups per month. Over a whole year is that really too much of an increase to stop enjoying my ///M? Not in my opinion.

I bet this engine will disseminate throughout the range including the X5's, 5's, 6's, 7's and 8's ( CS concept)... it will replace the 4.8 liter 360hp/360tq engine currently used by all those models.....

Atleast not in my opinion.
I don't think it is the PRICE of gas that will give wealthy people some pause.

It will the monthly operating costs of these vehicles will exceed their lease/finance payments. The first time in history where your M3 lease payment might be $1000 per month, and the fuel, insurance, tires are $1500 per month with fuel taking the largest piece of the pie.

The wealthy are not using their power boats like they used to. Living in San Diego, I see them all parked and gathering dust in the harbor.

You need to keep in mind, that when gas hits $7 per gallon several things go up along with it.

1. Transportation costs.
2. Food costs.
3. Energy, electrical, natural gas costs.
4. Water costs, uses electricity to be pumped.

$7 per gallon gas will actually cost you around $5k per year more. You just don't realize it yet.

Hawaii gets it. They are currently paying $12 for a gallon of orange juice.

Wow they must really be pushing it hard around the track, did anyone else notice the driver's front wheel lifted off the ground in the 2nd pic?

These are exciting pictures, but I am distressed by the 2010 timing! I went looking for a fast SUV over the winter, thinking I would get a Cayenne Turbo. But after lots of test drives, I just could not get comfortable in the Cayenne. The X5 4.8i blew me away with the comfort of the seats and all the features and I really liked the handling too. Of course on my test rides I did not really get the chance to push it...

So I was almost ready to buy one, but then I saw rumors of the new engine that the X6 is getting being in the X5 this Fall and I thought I better wait. I live at high altitude, lots of fun mountain roads, and the TTV8 seemed to make the most sense for me... Also, I wanted a couple options, especially the BMW Night Vision system, that aren't on the 08 but I hoped would be on the 09.

Now I am not sure what to do, running out of time to order an 08 and frankly sick of waiting--I want my bimmer now! When can I find out what all the options will be for 2009? I'm in a rural spot, the nearest BMW dealer is over 200 miles away. I was in a city last week so I went to a dealer to try and test drive an X6 with the TTV8 engine. They didn't have one and the salesman was arrogant and unhelpful, didn't answer my questions about when I'd have specifics on the 09 and whether at that point I could still custom order an 08 if it seemed the best deal? I want a particular combo of options (Platinum Bronze Metallic paint, sand beige perfed leather, active ventilated seats, ALL packages, NO Active Steering) that I have not yet seen anywhere and would have to special order. I'm the kind of person who keeps a car a long time and wants everything exactly the way I want it and then puts a lot of aftermarket add ons into it too.

I'd consider an X6 but it's a bit small, doesn't have my color, and the Night Vision is not offered on that either. I don't think I'm willing to wait another year to get an X5 with the TTV8.

Any help or advice would be appreciated as it seems there are a lot of knowledgeable bimmer fans here. I don't drive much at all, so gas prices don't really matter to me in terms of my driving. Of course they drive up other costs that have a lot of effect on all of us, but I just don't drive much, but when I do I want the best tool for the job!

Came in to say this. People think that paying more at the pump is just one thing but it's part of a bigger equation. Very good post.

Why do all the 'blogs think that this is an M or si X5? It is just planned engine evolution across the X6/X5//7 Series lines. The biturbo 4.4 L V8 will simply replace the older 4.8 L V8.

Maybe you should compare it to a 6 cylinder X5 to be equal.

Anyways, V8's aren't going anywhere. Turbos are the future.

New 7-series will have TTV8 and TTV12.

BMW will offer high fuel efficient cars as well, if you want one.

Agree 100%.

X5 is just getting the X6 powerplants.

X5 and X6 are virtually same weight, same foot print.

It will have more hp than the NA 4.8 liter X5, with equal mpg.

X5 4.8 - 5335 lbs, 14/19 mpg

X6 4.4 TT - 5269 lbs, 13/18 mpg

See i keep telling people, designs in the 3 series (m or not) show the future designs of the other cars. The new M3 hinted the future design of integrated spliters for the M cars... im so curious to see what the new M5 will look like in 2010/11
