Question Help; problem putting in gas in my x5 35d

Today the low gas meter popped up in my car.
When I went to the gas station to fill it up with diesel I opened up the gas tank just to find some metal gray thing in the way of where the fuel pump should go.
Please help me, how do I make this thing go!?
Thanks.

I sometimes have this. You need to push the nozzle in at a slight angle to push past that metal thing, which is actually a flap. I sometimes just push it hard until it gives - weird, sometimes its fine, othertimes it takes a bit of effort.
