There's no comparison...X6M is superior to GTS. X6M rivals would be either Cayenne Turbo S OR MB ML63.

Before ordering the x6m I really really wanted a cayenne turbo or the gts. I test drove the turbo and I did enjoy it very much. But once I found out about the x6m the cayenne made no sense. It is being replaced next year or the year after so if you buy a gts today it will look outdated very soon. The interior is horrible on the cayenne and that also is being updated with the panamera interior next year so again no point buying one now. And finally it wad more money for the Porsche.

The turbo does have the cool air suspension which allows for offroading if you really want that.

The x6m is more rare, newer, better options (soft close doors), has more power, and handles better IMO.

I think the comparison should be:

X6 50i v Cayenne GTS
X6 50i w/ PPackage v Cayenne Turbo
X6 M v Cayenne Turbo S

In my garage is a 2009 X6 3.5 and a 2010 Cayenne S. They are two different cars. I prefer the X6 for several reasons. It simply seems more solid, one sits higher and there is more leg room in the back seats. Of course the Cayenne's V8 has the torque but only gets about 18 MPG on the highway compared to 21 for the BMW. The Cayenne has the air suspension option, I strongly recommend it. I'm beginning to master the I-Drive, took some time. The Nav. system in the Porsche is more, still a very good system, conventional but also much lower on the panel. Both wonderful products.

You really had a difficult time learning the iDrive? Is this the newer iDrive interface?

I apologize to anyone whole owns or likes Cayenne's for what I'm about to say, but IMHO the Cayenne looks like a 911 experiment that went horribly bad. It's one of those things that I thought was sort of unimpressive when I first saw it, but as time passes I really, really don't like it.

In fairness, some people have complained about the X6 styling. But I think the X6 and its M sibling have unique style characteristics that grow on you, and you appreciate them more and more as time goes by. That's to say I liked it when I first saw it and even more so today.

Get the X6 M.

BTW, it's fast, too!

I'm going to sound really wishy washy here but they're both pretty nice.

Porsche Cayenne GTS

Pros:
-more space
-firmer ride (some people might think that a negative)
-adjustable ride height (very handy during snow storms)
-great exhaust note
-alcantera leather

Cons:
-too expensive
-155 less hp than the X6M
-terrible resale
-there's a model refesh next year

BMW X6M

Pros:

-power power power
-fresh style
-far less expensive than a Cayenne Turbo or Turbo S
-BMW driving feel

Cons:

-less space (though it still has plenty)
-BMW speedo (I hate how they overstate speed)
-its style isn't for everyone

What's more important to you power or practicality?
I like my GTS but the only way I'd buy one now is if I could pick up a new or certified used with very low miles for under $60k. Porsche is revamping the Cayennes next year and I'd hate to be stuck with an old model.
They're bumping the bhp in the Cayenne GTS from 405 to 450ish and I believe making them a little smaller. It will probably bring the 0-60 acceleration time down from 6 seconds to around 5 seconds.

My debate was over buying a new X6M or a used Cayenne Turbo S. You can pick up a used 2009 Turbo S for about the same price as a new X6M.

I don't know what model it is. Car was produced in early 09. As far as the new Cayenne's go, there will be a model change but I've read they will be smaller.

I haven't driven my Cayenne GTS for about a month (it's my wife's now) but decided to give it a spin yesterday to compare it more accurately with my X6M. I have to say the Porsche is pretty nice. It feels quicker in normal driving and more grounded than the BMW. The reason is that the GTS, in sport mode, has much more aggressive shift points and the throttle seems more sensitive plus the suspensions seems a little firmer. Plus the GTS sounds infinitely better than the X6M (which frankly sounds awful-like a sick diesel).
Don't get me wrong the BMW is great and I have no regrets but deciding between the two is akin to the debate between a X6 5.0 and the M.

Seriously? The GTS feels quicker? Is the sound making you feel that way? The X6M is seriously fast...

Well, a Porsche fanatic is sort of like a hound that's killed a chicken - you can never break 'em. They'll always be looking at the chickens out of the corner of their eye.

He might own a bimmer, but you know. . .

I thought his previous comparison was pretty fair.

I'm obviuosly not being clear. The X6M is definitely faster but it requires more finesse to get it to its potential than the Cayenne. The GTS is setup more aggressively than the X6M. Its shift points are higher and its throttle seems more responsive. What I'm trying to communicate is that the 405 HP Porsche taps into more of its power potential more easily than does the 555 HP BMW. Around town the BMW shifts pretty lazily unless I step on it while Porsche, in sport mode, stays in higher rpm bands and shifts higher too. So yes in just casual around town driving the Porsche seems as quick.
And the GTS sounds waaaaaay better.
I love my X6M but I'm not blinded by it. And Porsche definitely has its issues too,its about $15k overpriced and the body style needs a refresh.

I'm hardly a Porsche fanatic.

I've owned a 2006 Cayenne S and a 2008 Cayenne GTS.

On the BMW side I've owned a 2002 325xi wagon, 2004 M3, 2004 X3, 2006 M6, 2008 X5, and now an X6M.

Plus two Mercs, 2006 CLS55 and a 2008 CLK63 Black Series, and a 2009 Nissan GT-R.

All of these cars where pretty awesome but none of them were perfect. In fact the reason I jump from vehicle to vehicle more quickly than most people would is that their flaws drive me nuts (eg Mercedes putting automatics in everything).

I wouldn't call it my dream car.. but I really want one. I would much rather drive a GT-R over the CLK... but I had the opportunity to drive the CLK around for a day.. and that car is just the closest thing to race car mercedes has built for the road.. it is a confusing combination of raw and luxury.

Ooookkayy. I'll take your word for it, Mr. 997GT3!

I was just playing with you anyway. To each his own. I never really get hung on brands.

I think BMW might want to stick with naturally aspirated engines, because they certainly have built some awesome NA engines. But let's face it, Porsche fanatics know better than anyone, it's really tempting and easy to squeeze out the Hp with turbos. I know other manufactures have been using turbos for a while, but I think BMW may be a little ahead of the curve by switching everything over to turbos. The world is downsizing engine displacement and the only left is forced induction.

I'd still have the Merc if it weren't, as you say, confused. If the thing had a dual clutch setup it would have been almost a perfect car (still a little too heavy).

Don't get me wrong I enjoy a light hearted jab but I'm really not a Porsche nut. I only used the 997GT3 username because I ordered one then ended up canceling it in favor of the X6M.

I think what 997GT3 is trying to communicate (though not very well) is the difference between a N/A engine in the GTS and a F/I engine in the X6M Twin Turbo... The N/A will always seem more responsive and more eager to rev, it will also always rev higher...
The X6M has way more torque down low in the RPM range and like any F/I is not all about Rev's, in fact it does not need to rev that high anyway ...

I am surpised that with all the cars you have had, that you could not verbalize the difference better than you did

It has little to do with NA versus forced induction and everything to do with shift points, throttle sensitivity and suspension. The X6M, unless you stomp on the accelerator, will be in 6th gear at 35.
But I do agree I didn't verbalize my thoughts that well because you seem to have a difficult time comprehending what I wrote.
