X5 35d shopping

I'm about to start shopping for a '12-13 X5 35d to delete/tune. Beyond the usual M57 smog equipment issues are there another issues I should be wary of? Also are there any "must have" options?

Must have options IMO - Sport Package and Multi-Contour seats.

And Adaptive Drive if you can find one with it, but that's a harder option to find.

I would second the multi-contour seats as they are far more comfortable than sport or standard.

+1 and anything but the base audio. It blows and not in a good way either.

Since he's shopping 2012 and 2013, base audio is S676, which is plenty good. I think you're probably referring to 2011 and prior? If yes, agreed, base audio is garbage.

You happen to know the VIN code for those?

Yeah, I've heard the S676 system in an e90 and I thought all it needed was more power and a sub. That will be fine for me.

I saw your add and it's very nice but unfortunately the interior color won't work for me. I have a three year old and I don't think that light brown would survive.

Ventilated Seats are a great option, but fairly rare from what I remember when I was searching for a 35d. Sports package is a must in my opinion. I could do without the comfort access option and rear entertainment system. I'd trade both of those in for ventilated seats in a heartbeat.

Other items that may cause 'issues'
Glow Plug Module
Comfort Access System
NOX sensors (but these are under warranty until 120k, I believe)

The Dakota leather on these X5s is some of the most durable I've seen. I would never have the white leathers with kids, but the tan is very well made and easy to clean. With any leather and kids, you should keep a cover over the seats for car seats and feet. We use the seat back protectors too, keeps the back of the seats perfect.

Actually S676A is Hifi rather than top Hifi. Yes I have a 2010 X5d and 335d. Was S676A the standard offering after 2010? Base is S645A below.

S645A BMW US Radio: http://musicarnw.com/bmw-factory-audio-explained/
No tweeters, bass is actually not too bad. The problem with S645a is the output is an attempt to equalize the signal due to not having tweeters. It is not a clean low level signal. It outputs direct from the head unit as high level. Does not have the amp in the rear quarter. This can be remedied by changing the VO/FA in NCS expert and adding the appropriate audio equipment of your choice. So, stay away from S645A, agreed that S676A is acceptable..

S676A (Hi-Fi) became standard starting with 2012 models, with the Premium Sound Package, or S677A, still available beyond that (added glovebox DVD player I believe, equalizer, 2 extra speakers...something like that). Speaking non-M's here. The X5M had the optional Individual Audio (S752A).

I don't know much about the pre-LCI models, but I know for 2011 (and perhaps E70 model years before that?) the base audio for the 35i/35d was the S645A you mention, which is pretty bad. I think it's just 6 speakers. The 2011 50i got S676A standard.

I am also in the market, and have a different kind of question about the 3rd row. I have teenage kids, and having the ability in a pinch to throw 1 or 2 more people in the back is good (but not a deal breaker). But, we do go on multiple long (4+ hour) trips at least monthly if not more frequently. How does the back seat stand-up for 3 older teenagers or even adults for that kind of trip? Is the 3rd row worth holding out for given my need to carry at least 5 people on a fairly routine basis?

To be honest, the 3rd row is almost worthless. It says it can sit an additional 2 people but it's VERY tight back there. You can move/slide the back seats up an inch or two to accommodate the 3rd row but even still is very tight. I've never sat back there, but can only imagine just from looking at it. Older teenagers may be uncomfortable but I guess it's do-able.

JDNY516 - how about the other way? How comfortable (or uncomfortable) is it for 3 in the backseat for a 4+ hour drive? If I haul more than 5, it is little kids in the back or people I don't care about their complaining because it would be a quick drive to a restaurant or somewhere close. But if I was driving from say FL to NC to see family (9+ hours), would my 3 teenagers be happier 3 across or the smallest one in the back row? I'll have a trailer hitch and cargo carrier, so I don't mind losing some hauling space for the 3rd row. But I already have found and have a deal worked up on a 35D that does not have the 3rd row.

The regular backseats are comfortable especially because they can tilt back a little further as well. Should have no problem on a long haul. If you have the 3rd row up, there isn't much cargo room.

Remember the 3rd row is not a bench seat, basically 2 separate seats

Older teenagers in the 3rd row...guess it depends on how big/tall they are? As others have said, it's tight back there. For long trips it would seem pretty miserable back there, plus you'd have very minimal storage space with the 3rd row seats up.

My kids and their friends are perfect size/age (10 & 12) for the X5 3rd row seats. In fact, the 3rd row is very popular for short trips, everybody (kids) wants to sit back there. We only use 3rd row a few times a year, but it sure is handy. Not sure how excited they'd be to sit back there if they were 3-4 years older though.

Thanks for the replies. I think I am going to keep looking and get a 3rd row just so I can have an "emergency" extra set of seats. Since they are split seats, I could put one person there (two of my daughters are around 5'4" and aren't going to get any taller), so having one back there, one seat down, and a cargo carrier in my trailer hitch gives me enough cargo capacity for being gone on even an extended trip. I'll hold out for either just a killer deal or a 3rd row (hopefully both). Now for the gas versus diesel debate....

Almost 600 miles to the tank on the highway for the diesel...

If I could swap out comfort access and rear dvd entertainment system for ventilated seats (rare on 35d) I would in a heartbeat
