Buying Advice: 2012 X5 35d 37k miles

I found an X5 35d that I like, and I'm trying to determine a fair price for it. The vehicle is at a high-end used car dealer. It is black on black with almost every option. It has about 15 months and 13k miles left on the original factory warranty. It has new tires and brakes. It has a BMW tow hitch installed.

The issues are that both center console wood trim pieces have surface cracks. It had a minor accident in the lower front driver's side corner that scraped the lower plastic on the bumper. It has a scratch on the hood near the wind shield. It looks like a small object hit the hood.

From the option list, it looks like the original MSRP was around $69k. What would be a fair price for this vehicle?

Here is the complete list of options:

Wow that thing is well loaded. It's hard finding a diesel that well loaded. Took me months to find mine. I'd agree that you are looking in the high $30s for something like that, possibly in the low $40s if it's sitting on a dealer lot.

My thinking was that the residual on a 3-year 36k mile lease is typically 55-60%. That would put it in the $38-$41k range minus some for the cosmetic issues. So $37k would be on the low end of the range. Sound about right?

Most of the prices here are higher. The BMW dealer is asking $45k for a 2013 with more miles. Another used car dealer is asking $35k for a 2012 with 90k miles. They had a 2011 with low miles and fewer options for $32k, but it sold.

Just to give you an idea on the private party side, I purchased my well loaded (pretty much exact same options you listed above) 2011 for $27.7 with 72k on the clock. Although miles were a bit on the high side, a full year of CPO and maintenance contract sealed the deal for me. No accidents and car is super clean aside from a couple very small scratches.

Sounds about right. Miles and options definitely play into the mix, but figure roughly 4-6K more for 1 model year newer.

My BMW dealer CPO 2012 d 34k miles list price of $70.6 was $43k, they were asking 45. Out of the thousands of X5's in the US only 1-5 met my list of options. Fully optioned cars can be hard to come by in odd colors.

Mid $30k is the highest you should pay bc no CPO.

Only thing I can see missing are 20 inch wheels, fender flares and 3rd row and adaptive drive

It should have fender flares since it has the Sport Package. It's also missing leather dash, rear seat entertainment, and active cruise. But really, there's very few X5's with these options and those you listed (excluding the 20's, those are common)…it's pretty well optioned.

hmm, I thought all X5d's came with sport package. I thought flares were part of 20 inch wheel options.

I just posted my Trailblazer for sale. If I can find a buyer quickly enough, I'll run the sale through the dealer to save sales tax on the X5. Someone is supposed to come look at it tonight.

Thanks for the ordering guide. I came up with $70,845 total MSRP with destination for the options listed above. That means the dealer is asking around 52% of MSRP which seems like a decent deal.

There were 2 diesel trims - base and optional Sport Activity Package. The SAV package adds the wheel arches and 19's, with 20's optional.

I think I'm going to go for it. I haven't been able to find another 35d with the same options. I also found out the the cosmetic issues will be less expensive to fix than I thought. Hopefully, I'll have it in the next few days.

Does anyone have an option price list for MY2011? I'm trying to decide if this one is a better deal. It is a 2011 with 45k miles for $33k. It is missing a couple of options, but it has Adaptive Drive and 3rd row seating.

I'd jump on your second option over the first any day of the week. Although minor, accidents are no good for resale and you never really know how well it was repaired. Let's not forget the Adaptive drive option is extremely rare on 35d models so this alone would be a better selling point IMHO.

The main advantage of the first one is that it still has 1 year of original warranty left, which means I could buy the BMW extended warranty if I want. The lower bumper cover is only $180 and doesn't even require paint. The interior trim is not very expensive either.

I haven't driven an X5 with Adaptive Drive yet. I did drive my Trailblazer SS and the first X5 back to back around the same roundabouts. They felt pretty similar in handling, and the X5 was better over bumps. As far as resale, it seems like Adaptive Drive would only be a selling point to the few people that know what it is. People are either specifically searching for it, or they don't care.

I was finally able to sell my Trailblazer and buy the black 2012 X5. I think it worked out pretty well in the end. Now to figure out how everything works. I just found the button for the glove box and was quite surprised to find a USB plug inside.
