Jupiter's 2010 X5///M

Well, I did a quick search and found that I did in fact post an intro thread when I bought the X, so I guess this isn't really an intro thread. I've had the X for just about a year now (4 more days!) and its finally becoming a vehicle that I enjoy owning. Let me just say though, the first year has been rough.

Shortly after the test drive, I had to put sway bar end links in it. And then, about a month later, the check engine light popped up. First it was an O2 sensor. Then it was another one, then it was the little vacuum tube that runs across the engine (you V8 X owners all know what I'm talking about)... Then it was the gas cap. Then it was the DMTL pump... And then it was the vehicle's software...

Let's just say the thing has had a check engine light for one reason or another for the last year. But, I pushed forward. Aside from that, it needed a vacuum pump (the one on the back of the right cylinder head), and a bunch of oil seals in the valley...

So, here we are, a year later, about $5000 in unplanned maintenance, and with an X5 that I think is finally going to be trouble free... I literally just picked it up from the dealer last night (hopefully for the last time). We'll see...

Anyway, aside from that, I've done some little maintenance myself including a new iDrive controller, Posi-Quiet brake pads, color matched reflectors/badges, K&N filters, and front spacers. I haven't spent any other money yet because I've been ensuring the headaches were worked out before buying any other fun stuff...

But I digress. The thing finally seems to be figured out and happy, it runs well, and its time for mods. Let me mention too, it took phone calls to the BMW Field Service Engineers to figure out the final fix on the check engine light... Software compatibility to new parts installed... I can explain more if necessary.

Coming soon are Lux H8 160 angel eye bulbs (just ordered them tonight, passenger side is out right now), rear spacers, and hopefully some springs. I'm also thinking about some go fast goodies, but not sure just yet (catless DPs and a tune). I've got to save some money for modding my M3 too...

Anyway, here's a few pics. I'll try to update as time goes on, assuming of course she stays trouble free...

On another note, the list of courtesy vehicles I've driven in the last year...

1. 2015 X5 35i
2. a Jetta.... WTF!?
3. 2015 328i
4. 2015 X1 28i S drive
5. 2015 328i
6. 2015 320i (manual seats, no tilt down passenger mirror... a sad BMW...)

All that nonsense, I still absolutely LOVE this thing... Sometimes more than my M3!

Hey Jon, good to hear everything has been sorted out and it's driving so well.

It looks great - those style 239's really work well IMO, better than either of the stock E70 X5M wheel options.

Would look really good dropped on the 1.2's

Thanks buddy, I completely agree. I'm slowly deciding what mods I want to do, but it's hard allocating money one way out the other... Dinan exhaust would be really nice on my M3 too...

Still loving your X5 mate. Gorgeous in silver, and great choice of wheels. Looking at how much you spent on repairs, would a warranty have been a better financial bet here?

Hmm, yeah, I honestly think a warranty wouldn't have been a BAD decision, because who knows what this thing will cost me down the road. However, for the vehicle to be warranted, I would've needed to let BMW do a full inspection, pay for any and all repairs at the dealer, and THEN purchase the warranty. So, it still would've cost me another $3k or so to go the warranty route. I hate not having a warranty, and I get a sinking feeling anytime something goes wrong, but I am pretty confident that I can handle this thing. My dealer has been pretty good to me, helping me out when and wherever they can.

Yes, front splitter is OEM performance. And I too am excited to do a few things to it as well.

I have had similar loaner cars from the dealer except the x5 and vw. The 320 is a confusing car. Not much power but kinda fun to drive if you push it hard every time. And will need to push hard to really get anything out of it anyways. Coming from almost 100% awd cars/SUVs I was surprised how the 328i red handled. will request a new x5 as loaner next time. Mine is 2011 x5 35i premium.

Thanks buddy. To be honest, this is my wife's vehicle, so I can't go crazy with mods, but I'd like to do a couple things. I'd love to do catless downpipes to reduce under hood heat, but I'd also like to do the OEM exhaust mod for a little more sound. I think both will be too loud though... I'd also like to do a tune. That's it for performance. Aside from that, I would like to get the carbon fiber rear diffuser, and then I'd love to swap out the piano black trim for the carbon leather...

If money were no object, I'd love to swap in the LED lights and I'd REAAALLLY love to retrofit a DCT. I just drove my buddy's F10 M5 and the awesome power of the S63 with the DCT combo is amazing, I'd kill for that in the X5///M.

Aside from that, I don't think there's much else. The wheels need refinishing, which I'll do as soon as I replace the tires (can't wait to do this, dump the RFTs for the Michelin PSS).

Anything else?? Meh, I think that's enough.

A little update. Finally got the new angel eye bulbs in. Bucked up for the Lux H8 160, $209 shipped from their site. I was skeptical being that the X already had some sort of aftermarket bulbs in it, but one crapped out, so I had to do something. After watching videos and seeing pics, I figured they were worth a shot. Well, here's a few pics. My initial review is that the product is definitely a quality one. Very well packaged, appeared to be a solid product. No install instructions, but then again, are they needed? I didn't need them, took me about 15 minutes to install. New bulb sealing o-rings are included, that was nice as well.

As for the results, well, I'm happy. As we all know, the X5 angel eye design is pretty inferior, but that being said, I am pleased with the results... So, that being said, pics... Let me know your thoughts...

Well packaged...

New vs. Old (cheap eBay crap I'm sure)

New in the passenger side, old on the driver side

Both new bulbs installed...

With the headlights.

Random picture outside the garage... I'm happy...

Well, just got the X back from the dealer again... Check engine light came on a couple days ago. Yes, I'm absolutely serious... Long story short, the DMTL pump had failed again, but with the BMW service engineer involved now, they have been doing more research and it appears that the design wasn't great to begin with, so they modified my truck to prevent any future issues (more details to come in a separate thread)...

Anyway, after yet another 328i loaner, I have the truck back, running just as well as before (all these check engine light incidents haven't affected the truck's running, still runs just fine).

Also, I picked up a set of 20mm rear spacers from a buddy, so I'm going to be temporarily installing them to see if I like the look, and then I'll order some extended bolts if the width is pleasing.

I'll give you guys one guess where I'm at...

Service department, with the X. What's really disappointing is that it runs so good! All of these check engine lights are for silly emissions crap, stuff we don't even have to deal with in Florida!

Even a super nice guy like you must have limits. I'm just putting it out there: There'll be no bad feelings at all should/if you ever decide enough is enough.

Yes, we are reaching our limits with this thing. But, an update... The DMTL pump that was causing all of the CEL issues before is not the problem this time! That's great, it means we are making progress, but it sucks because we now will possibly have to pay for this repair. The issue this time is the fuel tank vent valves. My advisor had to order one of the valves, so they've kept the truck over the weekend, should get a call today hopefully. Also, he was looking more into the service history, looks like it's about every 10 days that the truck had been in there, so they are trying to figure out how to verify the repair before giving it back to me. Either way, he said the work is about$1400, but BMW was going to goodwill most of the cost seeing as how these new issues are still part of the same emissions system that has been causing all of this trouble.

We'll see what today brings for news. Until then, enjoying the '15 X5 Sdrive 35i. It's a fairly nice truck with enough options that make me think it could be a sensible replacement for the X5M...

Also had a 320i '15 as a courtesy, It was interesting to drive, but being 6'2 I wanted something like an X3, they had one but it was already signed out, would have been heaps better.

Unbelievable. Hopefully this will be the end of it. Like I said before, I'd never own a BMW without a warranty and especially not an M! I wonder what people do with X5Ms or X6M that are out of factory *and* extended warranty. Do they just drop like a ton of bricks in value because the new owner KNOWS he'll have to have a bottomless wallet to keep it running?

I do own it out of ALL warranty... Same thing with my M3...
