E70 X5d 12k Mile Road Trip Prep
Hi All,
I just bought an 09' X5d with 97,000 miles I plan on driving from Canada to Mexico this winter putting on 12k miles in 3 months. The car has a mediocre maintenance history. The previous owners were reactive not preventative unfortunately so I am thinking about doing a major service on it including a full EGR, SCR and DPF delete with tune prior to hitting the road. The only thing it really needs immediately is the glow plug controller as it has a check engine light for this and the lower control arms. The items I plan on doing for reliability and preventative maintenance are listed below and I am wondering if I am missing anything or if I could defer some of these items, thoughts? : - Oil, air, cabin and fuel filters - Brake, coolant, front/rear diff, transfer case and transmission fluid flush - Transmission mechatronic sleeves - Water pump, thermostat, tensioner pulley, idler pulley and harmonic balancer - Serpentine belt and ac belt - Glow plugs and glow plug controller - Intercooler and intake charge pipe O-rings - All vacuum lines - Intake manifold gaskets - Swirl flap delete and EGR delete - DPF delete exhaust system consisting of a cat less down pipe 3” and a mid section - Lower control/thrust arms |

It has new tires and brakes front and rear. Tune is a required for sure...
Shocks would be nice but even at this rate I will be spending thousands reconditioning to get this thing reliable. I definitely do not want a breakdown in middle Mexico with this vehicle. |

Where you headed? Cabo?
Should be awesome, i would preventative replace many cooling components, hoses, clamps, expansion tank, etc. Take a look at your fuel pumps/sensors as well

Why buy a car and not drive it? Most of the items on the list look like maintenance items that need to be addressed at that mileage regardless of the 12k mile road trip.

why are you replacing the glow plugs and glow plug controller if there's no codes?

Sunny_j Is that a common problem with BPC tunes? I have a BPC tune and it doesn’t like starting in cold weather. Are they known for messing up the glow plug cycle? |

Check your rain trays and fuel pressure sensor (they go bad and leak fuel into the DME). Bring an extra ground strap with you as well.
