First major repair, and it sucks.

So I just got the first major, after warranty repair estimate, and it's a whopper. This actually affects X5 owners as well, if my advisor at Dinan is to be believed.

My AC conked out last week and I took it to the dealership for what I thought would be a freon recharge. Nope. Turns out there are hose leaks from the compressor, and the only way to access it is through the dashboard. My dealership quoted $4500 (!) with every possible discount my advisor could think of (goodwill, loyalty, BMW CCA).

I then took it to Dinan for their estimate, and it came in slightly lower at ~$3700. But the interesting thing was that my advisor at Dinan told me he'd gotten a lot of these inquiries, all from X5 and X6 owners. Evidently there's a bit of a design question regarding where BMW chose to place the compressor.

So I'm not quite regretting my decision to skip the extended warranty since the car seems mechanically sound and I only put on about 8,000 miles/year in the time I've owned it, but I do feel something close to regret lol. Although I haven't looked closely at the extended warranty terms to see if it would even have covered this repair.

Anyway, thought the board might find this info useful. Hope someone gets something out of my suffering lol.

I'm sorry to hear your problem. I would try DIY first before cash out the money stacks.

Thanks danielsan. Unfortunately, I am so un-handy I occasionally look with confusion at a hammer and nail. Well maybe not that bad, but certainly not nearly skilled enough to do what my service advisors are telling me would be a 2-day job for their techs.
