Winter Pirelli's

Which do you think its better? Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow Runflats vs Winter Carving Edge Runflats.

I am deciding between these for my winter setup, mostly city driving, lots of snow and ice where I live in the winter. Price is about the same for the 20's setup.

Thanks.

I have Pirelli Scorpio, often criticized on the web, but i like them. Also Pirelli (in Europe) offers a free two year warranty on tires (insurance). So whatever happens, they send you a new tire. BMW offers bridgestone, which i do not like and more importantly BMW pricing and NO insurance.

No to Pirelli

Sorry, had the Scorpions and was not a big fan. I now have the Bridgestone WM-25s. I like them enough. Fact is, the X6 is a 5000lb elephant, so you can't expect miracles. Unless you get studded tires of course.

Check out tirerack.com for some reviews. Also look into Nokian tires. Amazing.

I had the Ice and Snow (came w X6) in Edmonton and was pretty happy. My wife has run Nokians on her last few vehicles and those are my winter tires of choice. Fantastic tire.

Great question. I've actually had both. I had the Ice and Snows on my 2010 X5 and loved them. I just picked up my new 2013 X6 in July and thought I would give the carving edge a try on my new winter wheels. They are even burlier then the I&S. They handled amazing in the rain and snow during sandy. Heres a pic. I would highly recommend either.

Help needed! New to the site, my M arrives on Monday and is going to be used by a hockey mom, about 20000 miles a year. Going to run 22's in the summer but I need to order something Monday AM to use in the winter.

1. Scorpion Ice/Snow 275/40/20 and 315/35/20

2. Nokians WRG2 275/40/20 all the way around on the stock 10" and 11"
wheels

Thnx in advance, sorry to bring this topic up AGAIN....

I went with the Scorpions and retained the staggered setup. Very Happy. Not in snow more than few days per winter. I like their behavior on the road. Their snow performance is good as well.

Nokians, although 275 are stretched pretty tight on the rear wheels.

Went with the Ice / Snow, hope I made the right call.
Really wanted to try the Nokians but needed them ASAP, tire rack will will have the ice/snows on my door Wed, mounted on Thur., 5 hour drive to hockey on Friday.
Other concern with the Nokians was the stretch as Tmac said on the rear. Anything will be better then stock.

I just went through this on my X5M. I felt the stock 20" staggered wheels probably weren't going to cut it for the long Montana winter so I bought a set of 9x19" 298M wheels. For me the tire choice was between Blizzaks and Pirellis. I chose the new Pirelli Winters over their decade old Ice and Snow design primarily from the recommendations of the Cayenne crowd. The Pirelli Scorpion Winter was just introduced this fall and is to replace several of the Pirelli winter product lines. My size, 255/50x19, is available as both runflat and non-runflat.

I can't tell you how they are yet as the truck won't be going to Montana for 3 more weeks

The Scorpions are high speed snows whereas the Winter Carvings have a lower speed rating, cost less and are better in snow/ice (presumably worse on dry pavement). Scorp. I&S is a half baked snow tire - now called a winter tire (which I run on the X and like) and the other is a more dedicated hard core, old school snow tire.

Pirelli has a new redesigned v rated winter tire. That's the best bet IMHO.

Regards,
DRP

Winter tires

I'm stationed in Germany and have Scorpians on my X5M. Great tires. No traction or handling problems at all.
