Yeap, so true. I love stretching the "legs" of the 35d on the highway, so effortless getting up to speed.

New X5 owner

Just got my 2007 X5 today! It has 147k miles. It is a 4.8 with the M sport package. Few issues where my xdrive computer keeps rebooting. I think it might be a battery issue. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Put a new battery and get it programmed at the dealership.

We need a way to program it ourselves. Do they make a bmw tool for that and other diagnostics?
But ya, a low battery can cause malfunction errors fro. what I hear.

airlift sells a cheap kit that puts a small bag in the middle of a coil. I think it runs less then 200$.

I think you are better off without rear bags, they are not cheap to repair. Coils are though. They will probably go bad a lot less often to.

I clear all my stuff with a Launch 129P.

http://launchtechusa.com/crp129p/

it was 500$ through my Matco man, so it might not be the best fit for everyone. It hooks to a majority of the fleet I support, My Mack dump trucks, and my personnel vehicles, except my 540i6

I think they sell a BMW specific scan tool on ESC for like 100 some dollars

I actually just sized out my coils and ordered a set from
Them. Can’t find any documented time that someone put them in, and I can’t imagine I’m the only coil rear’d X5 owner that has wanted to tow a lot of weight. I’ll document them when I get them!

Here are some pics of the recent look under the skirt... I think I can rule out the rear main seal. Anybody see anything else besides opg? Got a quote for 1800 at the dealer.
1200 at a local BMW shop. Might be worth a few bucks extra to take it to dealer. Any thoughts? Thanks again.

After driving it a bit, seems to have worked that issue out. It does however, have an oil and coolant leak. We have a great mechanic here in Orlando, way less than the dealership and specializes in German cars.

Need to find one in the Bangor Maine area, we are moving in a few weeks.

171k miles on a 2007 3.0si here

I've only had this car for about a year but only major repair was a starter which required removing the intake manifold. Other than that, a battery, expansion tank reservoir, purge sensor, and front thrust arms were all replaced. Next thing I'm expecting to go out is the valve cover gasket.

previous 2 owners seemed to have taken better care of the car then myself haha

You guys sound exactly like me talking about the 50i !
Around town it always feels like I am driving around more than I need, despite the decent handling. I rarely even brush 2k rpm in town.

But man on Road Trips, this thing is The Sh!T ! Cruising at 80, GOBS of tq/hp just under the pedal, and the suspension comes into its own... And all the HUD/Tech/sound system, What a Fine Long Distance Machine.

Agreed- I've done a 14 hour day in the X5, the second half of it towing, and I only got tired during the last half hour after it got dark. I wish I had the HUD and the comfort seats!

Have a 2012 X5 50i, bought it used December 2017 with 101K miles. Has about 110K now. Bought a $3K extended warranty that covered almost nothing of about $2,000 in repairs, it runs great but constantly needs something fixed, engine compartment, coolant sensor, coolant temp sensor, water pump, now it's making a squeaking noise from the front end passenger side. Love the car, I'm the third owner, but it's a sinkhole of expensive maintenance and repairs.

You needed an 'exclusionary' warranty, you probably purchased an inclusionary warranty that has all sorts of exclusions. An exclusionary would have covered all those items you mention. Unfortunately most of the good companies that once offered exclusionary warranties on these vehicles no longer will write an E70 X5.

Repairs and maintenance can be very expensive, but if you're willing to deal with that, these E70's are a bargain these days.

They still do but are expensive. The key to buying any used car is, buy one that's well taken care off (more $$$$) and buy a good warranty. I just bought an exclusionary service plan 5/60 for $6800....expensive, you bet but atleast I would have a peace of mind and the convenience of just droppin it off at the dealer without much bitching with the company

I would prefer to buy a better X5 for $6800 more then buy an extended warranty.

No one gives any warranties for X5 more then 5 years old.

It's hard to buy a service contract for a 2012 with 67,000 miles than one with 39,000 miles. For my recently acquired 2012 X5M with 40,323 miles, I was able to get a service contract through Toyota. Did I pay a lot, probably yes but dealing with these extended warranty companies is very tricky though. On surface they look great but wait until you read the fine print and that's where the frustration comes in.

I first bought a Carchex 5/60 for $5600 but then the fine print read, max payout during the contract period would be $15,000, so I cancelled that and bought this one

Instead of spending money on mods, i opted to get a good warranty instead.

The key is, find a low mileage vehicle and you will find a good contract as well

I purchased an ext on my 2012 with 102k on the odometer from a BMW dealer. It was 3600 for 3yrs or 36k miles. Doesnt cover leaks but already had a water pump and a contol arm replaced using the warranty. Those services were $2500. I am still covered until 138k or two more years. Ill take that warranty any day....

Not bad, what company? You must read the fine print to see if it covers the hoses, pipes and tech parts (NAV etc)?

The company is ethos. Doesnt cover seals/gaskets or the tech components but mostly everything else.

My extended warranty is my many thousands of dollars of tools I have, I have an enclosed trailer I do side work and work on my own vehicles with that has tools in it, I have a triple bank Snap-On with a locker full of tools, and a portable Rigid roll around box lives in the back of my X5 for some of my higher end stuff (electric impacts) to go in between my shop I get paid at, and my home.

If I did not turn my own wrench, I would not own a single thing ever German. I couldn't and wouldn't want to afford it. The parts are a bit pricier then the American stuff I owned prior to this, but they fall in line with what I paid for The GM Duramax based parts.

So I commend you brave souls. Keep fighting the good fight.

I think whenever I go to get rid of this X5, I will get a Cayenne, depending on how they drive and steer. The X5 beyond the E70 is to soft. The hard edge driving and steering is what attracted me to this thing in the first place.
