I got some info on the 2012 X5d

Hi Guys,

Since I'm waiting for the 2012 X5d, my CA has been checking with BMW NA every couple weeks to see if there are any updates, so I received an email from her saying that she got some info but not much, the 2012 diesel model is set to go into production in October but there is still a strong possibility production will be delayed and there is still no info on the transmission/engine...

Hope this helps to the people who are waiting for one, might be a long wait but I'm in no hurry to get in one b/c I love my 1M. I will keep you guys updated as I get more information.

Info from plant contact

My friend has a contact at the Spartanburg plant and the only thing they could confirm a few weeks back was that the 2012 diesel will have the 8-speed transmission. No word on the engine yet.

I suspect we'll get the 40d, but that's just a guess and I'm not an expert on the emission issues/red tape. I'm holding out for the 2012 diesel as well and hope they will start assigning production slots next month. If not August, then hopefully at least in time to use my Drive for Team USA credit! But then again, there's probably a good chance they'll offer a holiday credit in December given their last earnings release signaled softness in the US market (worst case scenario).

4.0-liter is doubtful, but I am pretty sure we will get the 8-speed auto. I'm looking forward to any other insight as I'd like to order one.

The 40d, is the same N57 engine simply tuned differently. (2993 cc) and it is paired to the 8 speed which the US will not receive for the diesel. The engines here must have the clean diesel tech, which the European models do not have. If you want the power of the 40d, simply get your engine tuned. The 8 speed doesn't provide anything noticeable in mpg gains, so I will keep the 6 speed fro simplicity.
See the MY12 October update threads posted here...all of this info and more has already been released.

I read the thread (already subscribed). All posts on the '12 X5 35d's powertrain are speculation at this point. Nothing has been confirmed by BMWNA.

The info is coming from BMW NA. What else do you need? Have you seen or heard of any testing or approval for an 8 speed diesel or the 40d US market?

Nothing official, but a lot of rumors.

How do you explain why BMW has been waiting so long to release the MY12 X5 xDrive35d? If it was just a few options being reconfigured (the latest news which arrived last week), the MY12 should have been introduced months ago with the gas models.

I think BMW is still hiding something, and it has to do with the powertrain.

There are still very strong rumors about the tri-turbo diesel circulating... I have Google alert for the phrase and it comes up a lot each day.

http://www.bimmertoday.de/2011/07/13...-xdrive50d-co/

It would be impressive if BMW surprised everyone with that motor in a couple months coupled with the 8-speed automatic.

I don't think anyone is disputing BMW will be releasing a 50d tri-turbo engine ... its just they won't be launching that engine in the USA any time soon. It would make no economic sense, given the USA is still a *very* immature market for diesels.

That's an understatement! Those of us "intelligent folk" around here would certainly appreciate it, however.

Great info on the dealer bulletin. Any information out there regarding availability of the M Package for the MY12 35d?

No M package available for 35d. Look at the posts with the packages.

35d vs 35i

If you test drive the 35d with the 6 speed tranny back to back with the 35i with the 8 speed tranny the difference in smoothness and refinement between the two are night and day.

The diesel feels clunky and rough shifting, the gas vehicle is butter smooth and quite.

Further, if you compare the cost of each and the fact that diesel is selling for more at the pump you are really not saving any money.

SO what's the point?

Now a VW Passat TDI at 50 mpg... that's very compelling as a second car in a family.

The tranny feels smooth as heck to me. And the 8 speed has had many complaints. Plus the cost of diesel to premium isn't that much different, depending on where you live compared to premium, so the increased mpg is well worth it.

I agree with you up to a point.

Unless you're talking about getting 50mpg vs 20mpg you're unlikely to recoup the increased cost of a diesel or hybrid very quickly. As for the difference in gas prices, that varies a lot by region. Diesel is the same or cheaper than premium where I live for instance.

That being said, if you need a car that can haul 7 people or 4 kids and 2 adults and get decent mileage, your choices are limited. The way I look at it is that every car choice involves compromises. Performance and economy are usually in an inverse relationship. The X5d is for many of us at the very edge of the curve as far as the compromises that we are faced with. The diesel provides the best balance between economy and performance. The X5 in my opinion provides the best balance of sportiness and space of any car on the market. With the diesel credit in place, the balance tips even more in the favor of the diesel because there was a very small difference in price.

Of course there's also an element of social responsibility (not trying to go off topic, just saying this factors in for some people). I think that the diesel will get significantly better mileage than the gas version over the lifetime of the vehicle.

For those of you who only lease the vehicle for 2-3 years, the financial aspect is very different that for those who buy their cars and keep them long term.

The big draw on the diesel is the torque. The fuel economy or how far you can go on a tank is also a huge bonus. You just don't get that with gasoline.
