E70 X5 35D Dual Battery Project
My battery dead three times in a months, did a charging test turns out fine. Since I work in my car a lot I decided to make a dual battery install to eliminate this problem.
I will use those lightweight lithium ion batteries, 2 of them. Also I will print a control panel which can fit perfectly under the ash tray cover. This is the design of the control panel. have some spare switch and ebay voltage gauge lying in my garage so I might able to use these. Main battery is the vehicle battery, I will install a battery cut off switch if you need to cut off my battery for some reason, voltage reading is provided. AUX Battery - 2 Lithium ion batteries, voltage reading provided BUS TIE - to isolate the added on system from vehicle electrical system if needed EXT PWR - "Ground Power". If I need to boost my car or charge either of those batteries. There will be a aviation type water tight plug located somewhere in the back of the car for easy access. Cabin BUS is for my bell and whistles , inverter for my computer, extra usb ports and aux heating elements The whole system will be installed under the trunk tray, which is right beside the original vehicle battery. Will update this thread frequently. |

sounds like a great project but also it seems you have some different issue(s) that you need to address! battery dead three times in a month tells me that you have some constant drainage somewhere! If that's the case the second battery will not help all that much!
good luck and keep us posted!

im not electrician but i believe they ll die soon as well.. cause low temperatures affects all batteries.. only trick charged battery get affected less.. if i were you i d buy one of these with a nice branded one instead of buying a new batteries.. and i d try not to drive the car short distances all the time or at least let engine work more.. battery blankets help also.. cause cold start amp is higher than optimal temperature start.. which is a nice reason to kill a battery that has less capacity already in cold weather..

not a charger but jump start/booster ll help to start the engine at least.. in cold batts capacity goes down drastically anyway.. assuming that you re sure that there is no problem in truck's electrical system though.. good luck. !!

I just did a battery load test when I purchase the trickel charger. Battery pass the test with flying colour. I'm thinking hard wiring this charger in to my car so I can plug it in like how people plug in their block heater when it was parked. It works fine. Charger shows my battery has 10% charge even i havr my car running for 30 minutes. Any advice on installing a voltage meter and charge level indicator?

That doesn’t negate that you have a problem elsewhere. Could easily be a component that is draining your system and having a trickle charger is just preventing the constant drain to impact your battery. We have been experiencing below freezing temps where I’m at and even with the vehicle outside, I haven’t had a problem.

Has anybody added a second battery to one of these? I'm going to be running high demand car audio and extra lighting so I'm going to need the extra battery.
Is it as simple as adding an isolator or does it need special components? |

If you're adding a bunch of audio gear a second battery in the back is going to take up some valuable space and add a good amount of extra weight. What kind of setup? I run 2 x 6 channel zapco class-A (12 channels x 150w RMS) a mobridge + dsp on the stock battery no problem. Running one 13" JL shallow mount. I do plan on replacing the stock with a deep cycle to get more playtime when engine is off, current battery is almost 6yrs old now.
If your X came with the the 220A alternator (4-zone climate control) I wouldn't worry about it and save the space/weight/$ for other gear. If it came with the 180A and you have an SPL system planned it may be something to consider further. |

Thanks for the tip. I'm not worried about weight as mine is a diesel. I plan on running 10x150w channels of Arc XDI amps and a 3000w Brazilian amp. The xdis and Brazilian are super efficient but I'm still worried I may run into charging issues.
