Need advise on X5 35d!

So, long story short, I want to move from 3 vehicles to 1. I currently am looking at replacing;

2000 323it
2012 Mustang Boss 302
2005 Ford Excursion XLT 4WD

Here's the details. I drive 323it alot to keep miles off Boss and 1M. The Excursion is used to tow and haul big stuff and the Boss sits in the garage!

I figure a X5 35d won't get the 30 mpg the 323 does on highway but may be even more comfortable.

The big reason I'm looking at doing this is all the costs of keeping and running 3 cars. Excursion get sreally bad fuel mileage (11 mpg) and Boss just sits there.

The biggest issue is that at some point, I may need to pull 2 Spec E30 race cars on a open double trailer (about 9,000 lbs). This may only happen 2-3 times a year but it could happen more. My brother and I race in SE and he is taking a new job where he will travel. He'll pull his camper behind his F-350 and we may need to meet at the track depending on what track and where he's working. He will be going for up to 2 months at a time so I can't let him just drive whatever I have.

So there is the situation. I want to get something that can replace my daily driver (323it) and not eat me out of house and home. I've looked at other SUV's and trucks and it doesn't look like anything fit this need better then the X5 35d. Has anyone pulled more then what BMW says it's rated for?

Feed back would be great! I wish I could just talk wife into driving a big ass SUV to work but she loves driving her 328xiT and won't drive something that big.

HELP!!!!

I can't speak for towing over the capacity, as I dont tow anything, but my father regularly tows an enclosed trailer w/ 3-4 snowmobiles in it with no problem. Im guessing the most he's towed is around 5k. It's rated @ 6500lbs, and maybe I'm naive, but I always assume companies underrate things like this.

As for the MPG....I'm averaging over 25mpg combined to far in my X5d. A recent road trip that was straight highway I turned out 37mpg. This blew my mind. I did the math 100 times...366 miles on 9.5 gallons...I generaly had the cruise control set at 85-90, and on an open stretch was able to open it up. I knew I would get better mpg than my old Yukon (13mpg), and I knew I would definately blow my M3 out of the water on the highway (17mpg), but to be almost 20mpg better than my sister's E70X5 3.5i absolutely convinced me that I made the right call going for the d over a 3.5 M-Sport.

Now if only they would make a X5Md I might actually get rid of my E92 M and consolidate to 1 vehicle like you.
