Brake Fluid Change?

My display just showed my 2009 x5 needs a brake fluid change. Is this really necessary? All my other vehicles I've never ever had to change the fluid except in cases of cyln failures.

A change or is it low, how many miles have you done?

brake fluids collect moisture after awhile and it will cause the fluid to boil at a lower temp than when it was fresh thus causing the brakes to fade or lose pressure when braking a lot, so i guess its just a safety precaution.

just had mine come up on my '11 X5M. Seemed a bit premature, but for whatever reason, that's what BMW wants.

Brake Fluid Change

My miles are showing 55k. I think I'll check the colour of the fluid and if it appears ok ( not burned/dark ) I'll just reset the warning indicator and continue with life.

BMW has always specified 2 year flush interval on brake fluid. With CBS, the computer calculates when and what services are performed. I would say 2 year flush interval should still be followed. So why not go in for a change?

I know when I had my 2010 M3 with 9200 miles in for the 2 year brake fluid service, the most the dealer did was check the fluid level and maybe checked the moisture reading from the master cylinder with one of those dip strips. They never bled the calipers because I checked each one and the bleeder valves were dry. They never even pried the rubber caps off the bleeder valves.

But I'm sure they charged BMW for the full brake flush service.

Every car maker has their own specifications. With BMW, they want the brake fluid changed about 1x every two years or 35k or so. Also, you should have your power steering fluid flushed every 50k.

Interesting, though BMW will tell you that their transmission fluid is a life time fluid.
