Replacement OEM Battery
Hi folks, my battery is giving me some issues and it's time for a new one. I've had the increased discharge warning for awhile now and things are starting to not work. My dealer told me they would register my battery for free if I get the same battery for my X5M. I have the 61212353812 AGM, pic attached... I've searched all over the internet and can't seem to find anywhere that is willing to ship. Several sites are "pick up only", even eBay... Turner and ECS both day no longer available. Is there something I'm missing? Really don't want to pay $100 more to get it from the dealer... Are there other batteries out that that don't require coding and only registration? Does someone have a secret stash of these in some warehouse that I need a secret code and handshake to access?

You’ll need to register the battery, cannot avoid it. It’s very easy with Carly or ISTA/D. You can find a 92AH AGM battery for under $200 at advanced auto parts.

Coding is only required if you get a battery with a different AH. I think a 90 or 95 AH replacement would not need coding.
Registering is needed for all batteries. I think there may be US laws against shipping batteries of a certain size by air which is why most won't ship. I bought my battery from Advance Auto Parts. Came out to like $150 after coupons. In reality only a few major companies make batteries and they are just rebranded. |

I just ended up putting an H7 AGM in my wife's 328i. I coded/registered it with Carly. Choosing the size/style/registration was all done at the same time. Went from 90AH-FLA (or whatever it's called) to 80AH AGM for $190. It had been going for a while as it noticeably turns over much faster now. It's false economy to put it off since you're going to spend the money anyway just do it now at your convenience. I lived in an apartment when it went in my 330i and I drove around with a battery and cables in my trunk for a week in the winter.
Carly screwed me a little though, I bought the old version and battery module since it's still for sale and they've changed the wording in the last week after my argument with them to clarify you should expect the items you pay for to work. New version is $60/yr now. There's likely someone local who can help you. |

Thanks, I just went with a similar H8 AGM from advanced auto/Carquest as suggested. My dealer confirmed they just use Johnson controls bmw branded batteries. My battery from advanced looked the same case wise. It's 95ah instead of the factory 92 though, and 900 cca instead of 850. I brought it to my dealer and the mechanic installed it and registered it for free... so total after I brought back the "core" for the core charge was $150... they took 20% off of the price because their online site was down and I couldn't retrieve the coupon from there. Tried to use my military discount as well, but was denied, couldn't use both. It's 10% for military, 20% from them, so I went with the 20% hah.
Thanks everyone for their suggestions! |

Related question: Is the OE spec for an E70 X5 an H8 battery? @9vapors experience suggests it's likely, but I can't really find folks mentioning that (or H6) for our rides. I have yet to get into the bowels of the battery compartment, but I'm really trying to increase the odds I'll be able to do the registration myself (Foxwell520 on its way...).

I've been holding off on my battery replacement for about 2 years now, Its still working well and I believe I still have original battery from 2012! I had some discharged messages couple of years ago and I got one this year but since I drive it everyday it doesn't have much time to go dead yet. Anyway I'm still planning to replace it soon enough, I did some research back in the day when I had those messages and at the time ppl were recommended following battery:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...KIKX0DER&psc=1 also had to buy following: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...KIKX0DER&psc=1 Is it really worth it to spend around $380? Looks like I can find replacement for about $150 and since I have Carly I should be able to register it myself?

I believe you are right about Carly being able to register it, although I was certain we needed to maintain the same spec that came out (presumably OE for many circumstances). We'd/I'd need a more sophisticated reader ($600+) to change to a different type. Thus my concern for doing this right while avoiding $450+ at the dealer or indy. Autozone seems to have an H8 with CCA of 900 for $190. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure this was the battery of choice at the time, that's why I still have it in my buy later on Amazon! I also think its much cheaper now than it was 2 years ago. (I'll see if I can find thread about it, shouldn't be very hard) In any case I will do more research and would also buy battery that will be as OEM as possible without OEM price tag!

Again, there are only a few battery manufacturers... they just throw a BMW logo on the same battery, maybe change the case color, but there is no special BMW internals or sauce in this case. Where ever you can get it cheapest would be the best, you can find coupons online as well. If you get it to OEM spec, you would just have to register it, which my dealership did for free. If you have to code it, expect them to charge you like $100 give or take.
Boneca, you've had yours for 6-7 years and it's still going, no need to spend extra for another type. |

It's a sync to the ECU, nothing about government or BMW corporate. Doing so avoids electronic issues and extends battery life.

If you get the same or very similar specs, then you only need to register... if you get something above and beyond, you'll have to reprogram. I just brought mine to the dealer, put the battery in the trunk and had them install it and register it. They did it for free.

I bought mine with similar specs from Advanced Auto, not the dealer. I grabbed a coupon online and got it quite a bit off with that. I put it in my trunk and drove over to the dealership and they installed it and registered it for free to include putting the core back in my trunk which I returned shortly after to advanced auto.

I always use pepboys.com for AGM batteries. They have a the L5/49 series with a 48 month free replacement.
Bosch for $176 ($219 with 20% off) after the $18 core charge. They almost always have a 20% off coupon on batteries online and I just pick them up at the store. -Rich
