On my way to see Avatar Imax 3d...

I am on the westside highway in NYC.. I am bearing to my right to go onto 10th ave by 14th st. There is about 3" of loose snow on the ramp, so I slow down to about 20mph and *BOOOOM*... I pull over as my cluster lights up like a christmas tree. Blew out my tire, bent the rim, and there is definitely some suspension damage.

I walked back to see what I hit, IT WAS HALF A FREAKING BOULDER. How does a rock this size get onto a NYC street, you ask? Great question, I can only assume it has something to do with all of the sand they stockpiled and used after the snow storm we had this weekend. I am truly dreading the call I am going to get from BMW service today. It is going to be expensive...

Avatar was crazy, btw. Don't wait for the Blu-ray/Dvd ... Go find an IMAX theatre and watch it in 3D. It is a once in a lifetime experience that can not be appreciated on a home television.

Bummer.

Sounds like you need a tank to drive in New York
Guess it's time for BMW to invent something that scans the road in front of you and evaluates it for any large objects, like boulders .

Hope it doesn't cost too much to fix

Sad truth is I would rather pay for it myself than have a claim on my insurance record... I hate insurance.

Bummer! I hate winter as much as you hate insurance companies...

Did you get the tire and wheel protection from the dealer? Probably seems cheap now...

Hey call your insurance and generate a claim. The insurance will pay for the damages and they will go after the city.
I would suggest taking photograph of what you hit and sending it to them. This will help the insurance win the case vs the city. I would also call 311 and bring this to their attention so they can have a report of you reporting it.
I would also see if what you hit is a part of the construction currently under development in the Hudson rive. If so, you can suing them or have your insurance do that stuff for you.
Its really easy and your insurance premium wont go up.
