$1200 flat tire ??
So I had a flat the other day. Got the runflats to a local fire shop. They plugged the tire. I ordered a new tire and went to tire shop to have it installed. They say they can't install a single new tire on an AWD system and said I needed to buy all 4 new tires. I bought a matching tire. Yes I get the tread is different from new to old tire, but find it hard to believe if you get a nail in the tire you have to replace all 4 tires. Is this guy FOS?

It is the scam of the century perpetuated by the car companies and the tire manufacturers. Just ignore the tire shop and tell him to fit the single tire and mind his own business. Nothing happens to the SUV. Just fear mongering. |

https://www.lesschwab.com/article/re...d-vehicle.html In an all-wheel-drive system, the central computer ensures that each wheel gets the right amount of torque. It reduces slippage (mismatched tires) and maximizes the wheel control. If any of the tires have less tread amount or smaller circumference (wore out tread) than the others, the computer will take incorrect readings and send wrong information to other components. Driving with mismatched tires (brand/tread/speed rating/load index) for an extended time can burn out the drivetrain $$$$ Hope that helps. |

Les Shwabs is a tire distributor. So its all sales pitch. Also a 2013 X5 has long since gotten used to large tolerances. Bottom line is sell more tires by scaremongering by tire industry. |

I get the sales pitch but if you use the logic, the whole thing does indeed make sense and if it makes sense, I am sticking by it.
If you want to drive your vehicle with mismatched tires or talk like an expert on doing such, please post some reference here for us until then follow what your BMW recommends Quote:
Drive train repairs are pretty expensive so if it was me, I would use atleast 2 new tires of the same make and model on the back. Last edited by quick; 09-14-2019 at 02:52 PM.. |

small thread difference wont hurt anything but if its more than "small" buying 2 on the same axle will be still ok.. they re just trying to sell more tires..

Buy 2 new tires at same axle, otherwise your steering will pull to one side, that goes even for rear axle.

I just went through this myself on an F25. From what I read, anymore than about 3/32nds difference in tread depth calls for replacement of all four tires as it will cause the clutches in the transfer case to wear at an accelerated rate. Looking at how the system works, this seems plausible.

I think what I am going to do is just get buy one more tire and have 2 new tires. Question is, is it better to have the new tires on the rear or front ?

Unless the the difference in tread between the old and the new ; is more then 5 mm., there is no need to replace all tires. |

Don't forget to multiply by Pi !
It's the circumference that matters. 3.1415 will get you close enough.
