X5 M turbo lines or hoses?
Started to notice a bit of a burning plastic/rubber smell from under the hood. Initial thoughts were the engine partitions but upon popping the engine cover it looks like one of the turbo coolant hoses right at the top is brittle and, mixed with some burnt coolant is creating a bit of a mushroom right at the clamp.
It looks like this hose was replaced at some point because it isn't a crimp clamp but rather a screw clamp. It looks like this has just bit in too tight. When talking to the dealership, thy say need to replace all coolant lines and expect a $3,000-$4,000 repair. Was a little shocked as it looks to be one four inch hose and clamp that are failing and from what I have seen on various forums looks like about $20 in parts. My question is, at what point do you determine that all lines need to be replaced over just the hoses? Many thanks in advance for your replies. |

Pics would help but it's a good idea to replace the entire cooling system in most BMW's around 100k due to the excessive use of plastic...better to be proactive vs reactive. I myself do have a turbo coolant, drivers side, closest to the firewall. It's got a worm drive clamp as well, so I'm guessing the line has been replaced before. I've also noticed that the drivers front line (the one that runs over-the-top of the charge pipes) always seems to be under more pressure than others when I swear squeeze them, so I'm thinking I need to reverse flush the lines.

Pics are attached. What I have found out from dealership is that they do not stock just that four inch piece of hose, but rather they need to replace all the lines and hoses for a cost that looks something like $3,000, when all I need is a $20 hose. No thanks.
Some good info here but still some ambiguity on hose size: http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1124308 Can anyone confirm inside diameter of hose size? |

Haha, mines in the same area just on the drivers side. I don't know the diameter, but you've gotta remove it anyways so you might as well just take it off and take it with you to the store.

Alright. So 1/2 inch hose and a couple clamps seems to have done the job for now. $10 in parts v. The $3,000-$4,000 (CAD) quoted by the dealer to replace all the lines.

Do you think I can get away with replacing just the couple short pieces or do I need to replace the whole thing? |

Just replaced the short one with new clamps. Looks brand new, no sign of leakage. The guy didn't even want to charge me for the parts. I have him $5 anyway. Took about 3 min to swap!

Ehhh, not to toss you a red herring here, but my burning smell had nothing to do with the coolant lines (and this was also the BMW diagnosis.)
The smell was from the plastics above the firewall. Give them a look at your convenience and make sure you're not chasing the wrong issue. IMO anything over a couple of hundred bucks for the replacement of those top coolant hoses is ridiculous. As you go through the process, be a great forum member and share your parts used, gotchas, and tips/tricks. I have yet to see a single model not afflicted with these wears and literal tears. |

I had a quote from the dealer for $900 (CAD) here in Van. That was just for one side (forgot which). I smelled something burning, but didn't see anything yet. I haven't taken it all apart yet. I think it's about 5 hours labor though, that's why they charge so damn much. Theres a trick to refilling the coolant and bleeding the system as well, correct?

I have a burnt smell coming form my truck but haven't pulled the cover yet. Doing it this weekend but in the even why not upgrade and be done with this issue for good. Keep in mind those sinch, Pex clamps are good for Pex tubing not so much rubber. The thermal dynamics of Pex tubing is completely different than that of rubber. That's why the clamps lose grip with the changing of the temperatures. U now what that is, BMW creating a continuous maintenance cycle. Why do u think the lines are only $75 each yet people are being quoted ungodly amounts? Profits over Humanity!!!!! |
