Here is the thing, it happened when I towed for the first time. I got a notice on the dash regarding an engine malfunction and potential power decrease. Seemingly, there was no change in power. After I unhooked, I romped on it and no problems, no notifications. I hooked back up, pulled it, got the same code. I speculate that there is a target boost pressure bmw expects and if you do not reach that within some threshold in time and amplitude, this code is thrown? I ordered 2 new boost control solenoids. I am hoping this fixes it, if not perhaps a diverter valve is leaking? I don't suspect it to be a steady state vacuum leak since it never happens unless it is under the load of towing. Can anyone think of anything else that could cause this under extreme load only? I was hoping someone might have a 'stock' n63 datalog that I could use as a control and compare it to my car. I am using the bmw logger. Thanks Chris Last edited by borderm3; 12-10-2016 at 08:11 PM.. |

As far as I can tell it looks like BMW's wastegates operate the opposite of a traditional wastegate, vacuum pulls the flap shut.
I am starting to think my problem is with the waste gate actuator not shutting under proper vacuum. |

Looks like this thread is super old but I will add some notes here in case anyone else gets this code:
On the N63, you can adjust the wastegates actuator arm fairly easy as they become worn with time. From the factory the wastegates are set to be firmly closed at -10psi. You can set this with a simple hand held vacuum pump like they use for brake changes. Also check your Crank Case Ventilation lines. They will crack right around 70-90k. They also have a special check valve in them that is known to go bad too, if this happens boost pressure will leak into the crankcase. This alone will solve most under-boost codes. Then go on to the pressure converters, diverter valves, etc. if the codes still occur. |
