Highly unlikely at this point due to the weight saving.
I personally prefer soft over hard, Hardtops are for Mercedes (heavy)

This is going to be rather interesting. I wonder what motor will car this the new Z. Currently the N55 and N54 motors in the current Z4 sDrive35i(s) models.

Im more concerned about power delivery than a flashy car that "may" look fast.

Who the hell is bitchin?

Six months ago BMW was not going halt production of the Z5 because the roadster market was "dead."

You actually think this mule just popped up because the board of directors changed their minds?

If a front-wheel drive BMW Z1 roadster comes to fruition and turns a wheel it's not good at all.

BMW's tradition is roadsters. And yes, it's a ridiculous you actually took the time to write a comment about a little icon.

No Soft top, or hardtop option please.

The only reason I have the Z4, is because its both a hardtop and a convertible.

Ragtop is a non-starter for me.

I thoroughly enjoyed my z4. Had it for 5 seasons and the hardtop was great. Love my 235 but I sometimes miss the z. I'm curious to see this new z.

A folding carbon fiber hardtop just like the Z4's or similar would cost a ton of money. And then that would be transferred to the customer. And then you'd pissed because this theoretical car would cost a lot more than a Z4 hardtop due to the carbon fiber and then you and others would complain and asked why didn't they use a soft top instead.

Super excited about this but the competition has come a long way since I last felt the Z car was relevant at its price point, it'll e interesting to see what they come up with.

I like roadster cars, Especially those with hardtops yes the weight on them is ridiculous, But for me in Sweden for example it looks really weird when you see soft tops cars during the winter its like, Dude its still winter store that thing away, With a hard top it looks like a regular car you know its a roadster but it looks normal.

Although i would prefer my self having the isolation effect of a soft top compared to a hard top due to hard tops letting out more heat, Out of experience from my old Volvo C70 that was a hard top it looked great though.

Nice, eager to see these cars, specially the middle one - the Z3, with a B38 on board.
Soft top is the right choice as well, if the 6 can have a soft top, so should a nimble smaller cheaper car have it as well, saves alot of weight at the top, and makes for a bigger trunk. The lines overall is also more pleasing to the eye.
I guess the Z1 is a Miata competitor?
And we need a coupe, just look at the past generation Z4 coupe, it still looks great imo.

Looks like a Honda to me....
...a S2000 in fact.

Soft tops look really ugly when they are up. Hopefully this is the Z2 prototype. We need a proper Z5 coupe version but I want BMW DNA not a Toyota. I will be likely switching to Porsche (GT4) or AMG (C63 coupe) anyway.

Thumbs down

I dont like it, not one bit. Compared to the Z4 it looks not very pretty, and the cloth rag on top is just garstly. (And paying double insurance for a cloth roof too).
And the weight argument is not a valid one either, since the clothroof has no stability for the chasis whatsoever they need to strut up the whole car to make it stiffer. Meaning more weight. They should have taken the current E89 Z4 Roof Mechanism and use carbonfibre plates.
