Vacuum Pump Oil Leak

So for those of you with an S63... FYI...

I brought the X into the dealer to diagnose the CEL code because after swapping the O2 sensor, the light came back. Long story short, apparently the vehicle will always say its sensor #2 (post cat) regardless of which one is bad (of course it'll tell you if its bank 1 or bank 2). So anyway, they said it needs a bank 1 sensor (I did bank 2). No big deal...

They also looked into a oil burning smell we had. I wasn't sure if it was burning oil through the turbos or leaking and burning. Well, turns out the vacuum pump (on the back side of the right side cylinder head) is leaking really bad, as well as a few seals in the valley pan (between the cylinder heads, under the turbos)...

Long story short, the dealer calls for 10.1 hours of labor for the vacuum pump alone, at $216/hr.

So, for all the oil leak repairs, and the O2 sensor, I'm looking at about $4200...

///M ownership shows its ugly face...

Apparently the tech asked my Service Advisor to NOT sell me the work, because he didn't want to do it...

Sorry to hear this. I know you're out of warranty but did you purchased any extended warranty (oem or 3rd party)?

Unfortunately no warranty. Having the work done. They're cutting me a break and doing it for $3700, still hurts though!

Ask for a description and the p/n's that need to be replaced.

Then compare those to the attached list of p/n's in the N63 engine campaign ...

If there are similarities, or better yet, if they are the same, you may be the first one to state that the S63 engine should fall under this campaign as well ...

What dealer u go to? When they replaced my injectors under goodwill they also mentioned my vacuum pump was leaking however they quoted me $1200 and wouldn't do under good will. My SA said there wasn't really any harm and I haven't replaced yet ..it doesn't cause any CEL

Yeah I inquired about this and asked about the parts. My SA stated that unfortunately there wasn't any way to rope the two together as it was different parts. He said they had 6 vehicles currently in for the N63 service work.

I go to Braman BMW. I understand that the vacuum pump wouldn't have caused the CEL, that was a separate issue. They just mentioned that there was a pretty sizable leak and that it should be taken care of. Given how hot these engines get, I wanted to get it taken care of, I'd hate for something to happen as this is the vehicle my wife transports our kids around in. Besides, the oil burning smell was getting a little offensive...

Hey Jon…that's $500 saved! It's all part of BMW ownership IMO. Staying current on maintenance is the best policy… Sure your X will continue to drive fine but at some point this stuff will pile up if you don't keep up on maintenance. I hate putting stuff off because sooner rather than later something else will pop up, and then the list grows.

Now you'll get home and you won't have to deal with any repairs…more time w/ the family, the pool, searching for that ZCP, etc.

Yeah Jeff, I was pretty happy with that. I mentioned that I get the CCA discount on parts and inquired about labor too, but he informed me it was only over the counter parts, not service department parts or labor. He felt bad about the size of the bill though, so he offered to do the whole job with the 10% CCA discount, and I was happy about that.

I suppose it makes up for the fact that they put my wife in a Jetta loaner, even after I called a week ahead and insisted on a comparable SUV as she has to transport our kids.

Yeah, it kind of sucks to have to pay, and a premium at that... But, for those of you that don't know... I'm away at sea right now (I'm a merchant marine sailor and I work on a large oil tanker transporting crude oil from Alaska down to the US West Coast)... I'm typically out here for 2-3 months and then home for 2-3 months. If I was home when this all went down, I'd have done the work myself. However, I just left about 10 days ago, and I won't be home until mid March... In the meantime, the X is our only vehicle and my wife needs to rely on it to cart herself and our two little girls around. On top of that, I need the vehicle to be safe for them to be in. I can't have the stress of knowing that something could happen because I skipped maintenance.

So, in to the dealer it goes to get fixed. And the beauty of it is that once they fix it, I'll be able to fall back on them if anything goes wrong after the repairs. If anything failed and I did the work, I'd just have to redo it again...

So, I get peace of mind. At the end of the day, that's good enough for me.

Doesn't the vacuum pump fall under California's emissions warranty?

Found this in the manual. If your state adopted California's standards, these are covered as well.

Florida has ZERO standards. No emissions, no inspections, nada.

After reading this I went and checked my vacuum pump and no leak yet. I am approaching 100,000 miles.

Wally, I'm glad to hear that. I have a feeling that our X was previously owned by someone that probably didn't take the best care. I always plan to do a little bit of rehab work when I buy a used vehicle, but this was a bit much.

Given how easy ours is driven, I'm sure it'll last much longer without any major problems. At least I hope!
