Dont let bmw rape your engine
It was 6k miles when I decided to do an oil change just for the heck of it ... I was surprized to see the condition of oil ... diesels usually turn oil black quickly, but this one seemed to have lost viscosity pretty bad, there were particles (dust or ??) in the oil, the filter was a mess ... I'm planning on changing every 5k, inbetween bmw's oil change (10k) ..... I also used AMSOIL Engine & Trans Flush right before draining it ... I'm at 26k mileage ... I've seen lab reports showing oil good & what not, I think anything over 5k is just not right for the car
http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-produc...code=FLSHCN-EA Will upload pics to the filter and oil - If someone needs directions to perform DIY oil change on x5d M57 feel free to PM me |

welcome to the club. I have been around engines long enough to "disagree" with BMW's intervals... TT motors are even harder on the dino juice

I just like taking care of my cars. Yes I spend a couple hundred bucks more but that's just the way I am

... therefor I don't really want to bring it up for discussion ... but I just want to remind everyone that BMW categorically recommends AGAINST engine flushing of any kind. They believe that using one of their recommended high detergent oils oils such as Castrol is sufficient. I believe that the reason behind this is that BMW cannot control the formulation of the engine flush products, but it's highly likely that the potent aromatic hydrocarbon solvents can and will strip the beneficial wear layer film on the metal surfaces that was put there by the detergents of a high quality oil. These same potent solvents also wreak havoc with the paper and rubber components inside the oil filter ... that may have been the "particles and dust" you saw ... Nothing wrong with 5K mi oil change intervals ... just don't flush your engine! Caveat Emptor.
