Engine Noise

E70. Makes a buzzing, whirling, whining sound upon turning engine off. Opened the hood and it seemed to becoming from below the motor on the passenger side. Lasted two minutes,started again when I closed hood. Re-opened hood and it continued for a minute then stopped. I closed hood and it began again.

Any ideas?

Additionally would like to know if buying a diagnostic tool or going with the bmw what app is the preferred way.

What engine? If it's a 50i or M, then most likely your auxiliary turbo water pump, they are under recall.

Pardon my ignorance, how do i find the engine type? The model is the 35i with the 3.0, 24 valve, inline 6.

I ran the VIN number on NHTSA and BMW websites and found 0 recalls. I took a video of the noise with my phone but can't seem to upload it.

Would it be an N55 engine?
