What size do you use for Winter Tires?

Hi everyone,

I have to put Winter Tires on my X5, but the original size for the 20" rims are:

Front 275/40/R20
Rear 315/35/R20

But a lot of people put 275/40/R20 all around.

Is it okay to put the same all around for Winter?

What size do you put for Winter Setup?

Thanks a lot!

I have 255 50 19 on all four on my 2012 X5M. I believe a narrow tire such as the 255 perform better in the snow. However, there are many here that have had good experience with wider winter tires. You will find a lot of information in many older threads in this forum and other X5 for mums such as Xoutpost and Bimmerfest. Searh winter tires, winter setup etc. Good luck.

Yes! I have 275 Pirelli Scorpions all around on my 20" rims (214s). The tires look a little stretched on the staggered rears, but that's how I bought them (slightly used). I haven't put them on my car yet (still holding out despite the inclement weather approaching).

Thank you all!

You don't have any problem to put the same size all around?

Because OEM 19" size are:
-255/50/19 front
-285/45/19 rear

and OEM 20" size are:
-275/40/20 front
-315/35/20 rear

Correct...Thus, my comment about using 275s all around for OEM 20" wheels. The rears are a bit stretched on the staggered. I haven't put them on yet, but don't expect to have a problem with them.

I believe the requirement is to have the front and rear circumference about the same. 275's = 90.0, 315's = 90.1. So no issues, with same tire if it fits otherwise. I have the identical setup as Denaliman. Really like the Nokian R2.

Re-Re-Repost from last winter:

Re-post from last winter...

Having moved from FL to Kansas City at the start of winter, I learned very quickly the limitations of the stock RFTs in really cold and then snow. I had the following mounted on my OEM style 300 wheels:

2 275/40R-20 Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow Run Flat Run Flat XL $346.00 each
2 315/35R-20 Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow Run Flat Run Flat XL $412.00 each

Wow - as much fun as the X5M is dry, having the power, AWD and true snow tires make it a true BLAST to drive in the cold and snow! I still wanted RFTs so I didn't have to worry about the no-spare-tire. Yes; expensive. Yes; worth every penny for safety, security and fun.

I know not everyone is thrilled with RFTs nor the Pirelli's, but I'm thrilled with my set-up.

I'm selling the 275 315 Pirellis Ice and snows that came with the vehicle and switching to the new studded Nokians SUV8 in 275 40 all around. As a couple of have mentioned, the rears will look a bit stretched, but it shouldn't be terrible.

I have 275/40/20 and 315/35/20 and the car works perfect in the snow.
