2009 BMW X5 35D Maintenance Tips and Gotchas

I am thinking of getting a 2009 BMW X5 35D Maintenance Tips and Gotchas, and I would like to get your thoughts on tips and gotchas on owning and maintaining an X5 with diesel engine.

Is there any major maintenance job that comes up after the 100KM mark? I am thinking of getting an X5 Diesel with 130KM on it, and I don't want to be blind sided by a hefty bill right after I buy the vehicle, such as replacing the water pump or replacing the transmission fluid.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Isn't it a good idea anyways to replace transmission fluid at 100K?
If you are a DIY'er, replacing fluids is no different than any other vehicle.
I found changing motor oil on my 35d a lot easier and cleaner than my Toyota Corolla.

There aren't a lot of diesels here on forums with 100K plus miles. Give it another year and all the early adopters will reach 100K.

This is a 130k KM, not miles. There are Canadians on the board too. The rest of the world is metric for crying out loud.

A local shop owner who specializes in BMW has recommended that I replace the automatic transmission fluid every 80,000 KM, and added that the no-change myth is just that - a myth. Thoughts?

Should I replenish the DEF fluid myself, or let the mechanic do it as part of the regular maintenance? Also, are there different quality levels? If I buy from Walmart, is quality the same as what the dealership sells 4x the price?

Are the brake kits for E70 gas and E70 diesel identical? My 2009 BMW X5 xDrive35D is getting to the point, where it needs to have its brakes done, and I was wondering whether I should purchase the parts myself to save some bucks, or just go with the complete package from a local BMW mechanic.

The DEF is the same that you buy in walmart that the dealer overcharges you for. You have to make sure you have the orange release tool in your toolkit in order to open the def filler cap. Mines missing and I have to go get one :\

I have a good friend which works for BMW and he strongly recommends following 30-50k mile trans and diff changes. On the newer BMW's it cost a bit more due to things like filters built into plastic pans. New fluids will always protect better against wear. He also strongly suggested 1/2 interval oil changes especially on the new turbo motors. I would rather spend a few bucks now than risk long term issues.

I did a 55k trans fluid change on my 540 msport when I removed the CDV valve and it was like I had a brand new trans.

Good news. You can just unscrew the def filler cap by hand. No special tools needed
