2011 X5 35d 128k miles

2011 35d X5 128k mikes I’m potentially looking to purchase. Finally pulled some codes. Basically I’m getting “Cylinder 6 and 1 glow plugs control circuit high” ….. “Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooling System Performance”…. “Lost Communication With Glow Plug Control Module”……also included a summary from BMW dealer back in 11/2018 -12/2018 stating something about “EGR cooler flap binding / seized”. Not sure if that was fixed or not. If anyone has any input or thoughts about this vehicle please feel free to chime in. Purchase price would be roughly 5k. Thanks fellas

The price is very good. If you're going to be solving the issues yourself, I suspect it could be a good value. If you're going to rely on a dealer to fix, it could turn into a money pit fast. Generic OBD2 codes are not very useful with BMW's. If you do get it, I'd suggest investing in something like Pro Tools.

FWIW, I bought a late 2010 (came with CIC like the LCI's) with 105K on the clock about a year and a half ago and paid $8500, which I felt was a good deal. It had a few known issues, but nothing expensive to fix. Am very happy with it.

AM.

He's saying you need a better scan tool meant to read BMW codes. Generic codes beginning with "P" are not very useful. Protool, Bimmerlink, with the appropriate cable or some foxwells dedicated scanners should work I believe.

Once you have the appropriate codes there should be threads for 90% of them that are easily found with a search either here or on e90post (335d has same engine).

As for general answers on x5d ownership, dpf is only good for 150k miles on average so youre looking at a few grand right there coming up. I would not encourage anyone to get one of these unless they delete, DIY, or have a really good fair mechanic and do mostly highway driving (short trips cause dpf to clog up and valves to get gummed up quicker). There are a ton of threads covering what to expect with higher mileage ownership if you search around, unfortunately it seems we dont have any mods here to make a sticky with a definitive list.

Well given what’s wrong with it I think you’d be better off with something else. At the mileage your at continuing to run it with emissions equipment is going to set you down an expensive rabbit hole. Not to mention it will greatly shorten the life of the engine and the upkeep will also be expensive considering diesel fuel cost and def fluid. But considering your looking for a deal it doesn’t seem like you want to spend a lot of money on it. If you were going to delete it, then sure it’s a great deal.

Seems like deleting is the way to go. Looking into Rawtek package and DUDMD tune. Will erase EGR and add race pipe with swirl flap delete. Sound good?

It definitely is saves a ton of headaches. I can’t recommend DUDMD, but I know some go with them because it shows “readiness”. I believe any tuner could do that though

I have a DUDMD tune with full delete, however I think Dmitry the tune creature for DUDMD stopped selling that tune. I live in a state where they check emissions every 2 years and didn't have an issue passing it. I definitely recommend deleting if you want a diesel.
