Is my engine dead? 2013 X5 35i X-Drive

I was driving normal and then the engine suddenly shut off, I turned it back one and got a check engine light with the half engine, limp mode, but then the car started losing more and more power. I parked it, and I heard a rattling sound coming from the engine and got the following codes:

2D55 - Variable camshaft timing control (VANOS), intake, cold start: notcontrollable.
2D5A - VANOS intake: Control fault, camshaft stuck
2D5B - VANOS intake: Control fault, position not reached.
2EE1 - Misfire, several cylinders: Damaging exhaust gas.
2EE5 - Misfire, Cylinder 1: Damaging exhaust gas.
2EE8 - Misfire, Cylinder 2: Damaging exhaust gas.
2EEB - Misfire, Cylinder 3: Damaging exhaust gas.
2EEF - Misfire, Cylinder 4: Damaging exhaust gas.
2EF2 - Misfire, Cylinder 5: Damaging exhaust gas.
2EF5 - Misfire, Cylinder 6: Damaging exhaust gas.
2EFE - Combustion misfires, several cylinders: detected.
2EFF - Misfire, Cylinder 1: detected.
2F00 - Misfire, Cylinder 2: detected.
2F01 - Misfire, Cylinder 3: detected.
2F02 - Misfire, Cylinder 4: detected.
2F03 - Misfire, Cylinder 5: detected.
2F04 - Misfire, Cylinder 6: detected.

After clearing codes, I got the following:
2D55 - Variable camshaft timing control (VANOS), intake, cold start: notcontrollable.
2D57 - 0x2D57 intake VANOS, cold start: Position not reached.
2D5A - VANOS intake: Control fault, camshaft stuck
2EE0 - Misfire, several cylinders: Fuel injection deactivation.
2EE1 - Misfire, several cylinders: Damaging exhaust gas.
2EE4 - Misfire, Cylinder 1: Fuel injections deactivation.
2EE5 - Misfire, Cylinder 1: Damaging exhaust gas.
2EE8 - Misfire, Cylinder 2: Damaging exhaust gas.
2EEF - Misfire, Cylinder 4: Damaging exhaust gas.
2EF2 - Misfire, Cylinder 5: Damaging exhaust gas.
2EF4 - Misfire, Cylinder 6: Fuel injection deactivation.
2EF5 - Misfire, Cylinder 6: Damaging exhaust gas.
2EFE - Combustion misfires, several cylinders: detected.
2EFF - Misfire, Cylinder 1: detected.
2F00 - Misfire, Cylinder 2: detected.
2F02 - Misfire, Cylinder 4: detected.
2F03 - Misfire, Cylinder 5: detected.
2F04 - Misfire, Cylinder 6: detected.

Cleared again much later that day, and got only the following:
2D55 - Variable camshaft timing control (VANOS), intake, cold start: not controllable
2D5A - VANOS intake: Control fault, camshaft stuck.
2DAE - VANOS, inlet, collective fault: electrical or mechanical
2DAF - VANOS, collective fault: electrical or mechanical

Then after a few days of the car being parked, the codes went away on their own, drove the car for a couple of miles and everything felt normal, but then my heart sank when I heard knocking while driving:/

While idling, the engine sounds fine except for the rattling sound. Any ideas? Could it be that VANOS bolt issue? My X5 doesn't seem to fit in that recall as it's a 2013.

Thanks in advance!

I mean based on your codes it looks like failed Vanos, which then might have caused the misfires and subsequent knocking since you kept driving. At this point, I wouldn't put another mile on that engine and hope you can tear it down and salvage it. Also could be failed injectors, they are starting to go out on N55's.

Go have a shop inspect/rebuild the vanos, as well as test the injectors.

I don't have any helpful advice to add, but I'm curious... how many miles were on your N55, and was it stock?
