How many problems have you had with your X5?

Just curious how many of you had many problems with your x5?

It has come to my attention that my 08 x5 4.8i is a complete POS, bought it brand new back in 2008. in the past 5 years, I had many items replaced under or not under warranty, here is my list, and I have come to a point to drive this POS straight into my dealership!!!

First year: Front audio display console replaced.
Second year: Battery replaced, Fuel pump replaced.
Third year: Battery replaced again, windows start to go up n down sometimes. sunroof stops working from time to time
Fourth year: Fuel pump replaced again.
Two month ago: Heads-up display stopped working, and BMW wants 4500 CAD to replace it!!!!

up to this date, my sun roof and windows still act up once a week or so, BMW can't repair them because there are no error code on them....are you kidding me??

I really hope I just got a lemon, but from what I heard from our SA, many X5 were built poor, is this for real?

Sorry to hear that. I had a 2008 4.8i with sport package that I bought with 20k miles. I just sold it with 90k miles and never had any major problems with it. Only had the rear inner tail lights replaced from water damages to the electrical plugs for the bulbs. Other than that it was good to me. And I drove it hard most of the time.

I just picked up a 2012 X5M with 8k miles and hope it treats me as good as my 2008.

My dad had a 2008 X5 and bought a 2012 X5 after he put nearly 108K miles on it in four years. He only had one major issue, for the rest he used it as a pick-up truck and the thing was SOLID. Funny you mention the sunroof, he had the same problem.

Mine is a 2011 but it's CPO, so I don't really care what happens to it. It will be sold before the CPO is up.

I'm an X5 noob, but no problems yet. Looking back, I've owned 9 BMW's in the last 11 years, and aside from my '03 M3's blown motor due to the DME/rod bearing issues (..new motor installed at the dealership ) and an EDC malfunction on my '08 M3 sedan, I haven't had any issues at all.

2008 X5 3.0si

- something in the sunroof frame broke
- battery replaced
- side mirror motor failed
- reversing camera failed
- fuel pump replaced
- tailgate soft close failed, new motor needed
- metal latch holding rear seats upright broken (first week!)

And this was having only done less than 30k miles !

I have had my E46 for 10 yeas and it has not had a single rattle since new. Most failures have only been due to wear and tear, this did not happen until after 4 years of owning the car. I don't recall having any work done under warranty!

I plan on keeping the X5 a long time but these failures are certainly worrying.

2008 4.8i, with 52k.
Just replaced left rear inner tail light on the hatch. Stopped working.
Under warranty i had the nav screen replaced, would go dark. Right side roof rail, due to corrosion, and the right side rear shadow trim for same reason.
One of my favorite vehicles, as it does a lot, very well.

damn, looks like we might have some similar production dates, perhaps it was a monday production.lol.
It is really strange how this x5 acted out on me as I had owned alot of Ms in the past, and recently I just sold my 650i which was bought around the similar time in 2008, never had any big or small issues like this one!

I wrote a letter to BMW customer service Canada explaining the disappointment I had to deal with for my x5, but I'm pretty sure they will just read the letter and throw it to the garbage can!

Good to see there aint many x5 on the forum are so troubled though!

My 2012 35d is going back or the 5th time in 7 weeks Thursday for a rattle in the tailgate area. They have adjusted, replaced, inspected and lubed about everything back there and still no better. It sounds like the door is loose or the frame is not tight and the rear twists. I don't know what to do anymore. First BMW and not really happy. Love the car but not the extra sounds.

I have had my 2013 X5 35d for 2 months with a whopping 750 miles on it. It's in the shop having the CIC replaced- nav screen went bright orange then black. I love the car- hoping it's just one of those things. I had a 2013 X3 for a year and a half previously and the only issue was some plastic clips fell off the tailgate.

I have had "issues" with both of mine, the M seems more reliable than the diesel though. you would think it should be the other way around.

I just bought my X5, so I can't speak to my reliability other then I saw no big repairs in the carfax report but I'll offer some comments.

Modern fuel pumps are liquid cooled. If you run the tank down to the reserve light running and beyond the pump is no longer fully submerged and it will burn out faster.

Having owned a 5-Series before, I can say that using some of the cars features causes issues with battery lifespan. For instance, the ventilation feature to cool the car down every day or the heat circulation while the car is stopped for a short stop draws on the battery and will shorten the battery lifespan. When my 5-Series' battery was nearing failure I had some odd things going on with the electrics(I guess because the voltage was sagging) like electric windows so the OG poster may be headed for a new battery replacement.

my 08 has had its fair share like yourself but I wouldn't consider it a POS. I mean moonroof cassette off the track is part of the car but not part of the car if you know what I mean. That took 3 tries to fix. I've had burned wire causing the fuel gauge to work incorrectly, and a bad mechatronic sleeve which may be normal for a 4-5 year old car. Also the idrive screen had to be replaced because it got completely dark more and more often. Gadget thing, again not the car. Things like that didn't happen in my previous car because back in the 90s it was more barebones. It's been 5 years and still satisfied with it overall, love it mostly. Every time I get the new-car itch I can't think of many other brands I'd be satisfied with.

Sorry to thread jack but how is the tire wear on your 20s? I have heard nightmares about the 20s. What tires are you running as well?
