Drive to Spokane and back, then let me know if you made it on a single tank of diesel (you can easily do it, btw).

579 miles on a tank - that's pretty good, and expected.
I am guessing you filled up in Redding after coming down from Shasta.

Which is why the computer is happy to report you will make 677 miles on next tank, IF you will continue the same low fuel consumption for the past half hour..

My 35d shows various expected range, depending how I have been driving for past half hour. Shows range of 480 if I was in city; usually shows 600+ when filling up near a freeway (since I just got off the freeway, having mpg of 25+).

Real life mileage

I traded my 135i in for X5 35d in January. My 135 wasn't too appropriate for long highway drives with two large dogs but the X5 is perfect.

I am averaging 25.5 MPG since I purchased the vehicle - high 20's to low 30's MPG on the highway and low to mid 20's in the city. Only 6250 km so it is harly This is a perfect highway vehicle - power is good, torque is addictive and ride is excellent. If only they actually had a 6 speed manual...sigh

Looking to trade in my 135i because the mileage on my commute is killing me. Dealer has a 2010 X5d with 75k miles but has the 100k warranty. I just have to pay a 4k difference and its mine, fully loaded. Will I have issues with this truck with the mileage?

I have a 2011 X5 35i. Not the diesel. I took a 170 miles trip recently and drove at speeds between 70 and 80mph. The average on the trip computer was exactly 25mpg.

I have a N54 335i 6MT and find the mileage on 335 a bit better than my x5d especially on highway even though the x5d is rated at better city/overall.

Hope that helps.

My dad's previous X5 was a 2008 with the diesel engine. He put close to 105K miles on it with only a single major issue.

Comparison with an N54

I have recorded all the mileage for all of my BMW's.

For my 2009 135i (N54) I averaged 11.25 L/100 km upto when I traded it in at 48,490 km. The engine was plagued with injector and carbon buildup issues so I don't know if this is representative. The travel was a mix of highway and city with a bimodal distribution ranging between mid 12 L/100km when dominated by city driving and mid 8's when on the highway.

For the X5, the data is not as clear cut - the tank is much bigger so I never record a city or highway dominated fill up and thus the range is much tighter but I can get a very consistent mid 8's on the highway and a good mid 10 in the city with an overall average of 9.9 L/100km (8450 km). This is recording the amount of gas and distance traveled - not using the numbers from the on board computer which over estimates the average fuel mileage. One added benefit is that diesel prices FALL in the summer when premium gas prices RISE dramatically.

Wheels/tires might make a huge difference

2012 x5d with 1293 miles.
I just bought a 2012, with the HUGE 315s on the back (275 in front) and I'm struggling to get 22mpg on the highway, going 65mph. I'm very surprised and a bit disappointed, to say the least. It's the same or maybe worse than my E53 3.0i.

These 20" RFTs are way too firm anyway, and the car handles way better than I need it to, so I may drop to 19s (or even 18s) with a higher profile, lower rolling resistance tire, with the same width on all 4 corners so I can rotate them myself.

I bought my 2012 x5 e70 last year in May, just renewed my tag, and start doing dpf delete on my own with kit on eBay. I can tell you that the 6 speed is the problem for e70 diesel. at 65-68 mph, the rpm is at almost 2,000 rpm. It is good if you are pulling horse trailer at all time at that rpm and low speed, but if there is a way to swap the f15 8 speed into my 2012, I would.
My average mix 50%-50% mpg is about 22 mpg, 90% highway is 25-26.5 mpg (65-68mph, 70mph or higher it will kill the mpg). By the way, you can't rely on the computer your mpg. I use trip log to log my miles and diesel added. The computer always off by 1-3mpg depending on which terrain you drive.
I have not driven the F15 new body style, with the mpg quoted higher than e70, especially 8 speed, I am assuming it stays around 1,500 rpm at 75mph (Help me out to clarify this for anyone driven f15 please?). Also if anyone think the 8 speed swap is feasible to be install on e70. I agree the RFT is harsh, I am looking into non RFT tires when I replace my tires. The draw back, I am doing Black Car Service, so RFT is a good thing to have in mind if I ran over bad debris that will blow the tire. I guess I can add the spare at the compartment, Boy it is expensive. BTW, I bought it at 50k miles, now already has 100k miles.
Last, please pardon my typo, grammar, and spelling. Cheers.

I average 21.9mpg and live in South Florida so a pretty even mix of city/highway. I get on it at least 3 times a day and drive on average 1000 miles a week.

I logged 572 miles on my last tank. I calculated it out to be 27.8mpg. This tank was approx 80-90% hwy going around 72mph. Interestingly the computer calculated mpg was 27.5mpg, pretty accurate.

I have aftermarket 20" wheels and although they are 20lbs/corner lighter than my former 214's I think they still account for a 2-3 mpg difference over the 18's and 19's.

I started using the Fuelly app and my MPG was horrible which led me to change the T-stat. First week after changing out the T-stat the X5's MPG computer bumped up to 24.5. Mix of daily local and weekend highways. Coolant temp also went from average 165f-170f to 185f-195f. Still on the same tank so at the next fill up i'll see my actual mileage in this tank.

Hey fellas. Just picked up a 2011 X5 35d here. We've made a few full tank trips (450 miles) and despite trying to keep speeds at or below 75 and really never getting on it, I struggle to get 25mpg. So far, mixed driving with really really light on the foot (and shifting early manually) I get 20-21.

We are running Continenental DWS's on the Style 335's. 255 width on a square set of 19x9's.

How are you guys getting close to 30mpg??? What is impeding our fuel economy? I recently replaced the thermostat hoping that would fix it (temp was only ever getting to 78-80).

Thoughts?

I could be wrong, but I think the tuned 35d's are getting those numbers of 28+.

Ok, if that's the case, it is promising. That's on my future to-do list. I can do a tune w/o removing all the emissions components right? I'm concerned that we may need emissions stuff in the future (if we end up moving somewhere that does emissions testing )

I've always gotten good mpg's. Before I deleted it looks like I usually got 25-27, and a 28.6 on highway at 73ish.

Here' my fuelly page. I log everything. I deleted on 3/17, so you're welcome to look at my records of mpg's before and after.

On my 70% highway commute, I seem to average 29-30. I very regularly cart my drift car around, and 50 miles of towing 6k lbs will bring that 30 mpg down to 27.5 pretty quickly depending on how aggressively I'm pulling.

When trying, I can get 31. The highest I have recorded is 31.41. That was doing 72mph on cruise 90% of the time, and included a TRIP INTO AND OUT OF NYC! I have no doubt if I truly tried, kept it at 65-70, and do a full tank of highway, I could get 32+.

Towing the places I do unfortuately means a lot of hilly, curvy back roads, or hilly interstates, so I seem to average 18-20mpg while towing where I go. I'm hoping to do a 2000 mile round trip Nj to wisconsin, towing the drift car, later in the year. I'm hoping I can get 22+ mpg keeping it to 70mph.

Holy crap. I would kill for that fuel economy! I don't know why I cannot seem to get above 21-22 combined... I tried really hard on the interstate and could not get above 25 too.

Have you ever opened up your intake and had to clean it out? Any cleaning of the emissions/exhaust system?

72mph on cruise control on highways nets me that mileage no problem. I've gotten 31.4 with 72mph on cruise, but that included a trip into and out of NYC, so I be it would've really be a hair above 32.

Do you have the ability to track your coolant temps? Mine dropped to about what you say you're getting when my thermostat failed open- These things run really rich when the motor isnt allowed to get all the way up to temp. It should be running around 88c, and with a failed thermostat it'll likely run around 60-70C. This will kill your mileage.

For my mileage records, check this: http://www.fuelly.com/car/bmw/x5/2010/spyro/881426 March 17th is the day I got the delete. My overall average would probably be closer to 28-29 if I didn't include my towing gas mileages. I tow 5800 lbs of drift car, trailer, and supplies pretty often.

My X5 is fully deleted, all emissions systems removed. Straight piped with the resonator on the ATM midpipe, to the stock muffler. Tuned with DUDMD stage 2. As far as I know, my intake manifold has never been cleaned. I'm going to replace the glow plug controller to try to get rid of my code, but if I have to replace a glow plug I'll probably clean it myself. Before tuning, with full emissions, I was averaging 3-4 lower. You can look at my MPG's before 3/17/2019 to see the mpg's I was getting before my delete.

My X5 is a 2010, and I just hit 220k miles. I know for a year before I bought it it wasn't driven all that much, so that makes it 9 years old, with 8ish years of driving. Highway driving is kind to these engines, and my car seems to have been driven 25k+ miles a year. For that reason, I suspect the intake is fairly clean. Must have been all highway miles, and the car feels like it's got 60k on it other than a slight vibration I'm trying to diagnose.
