I had the same question too when I just got my car, but no one seems to be able to give me an exact answer. I asked different dealers (parts and service) and they all gave me a different answer. Coming from many M cars previous to my X6M, I just stuck with the Castrol TWS 10W-60 for refilles for now untill I go in for my first service and see what they end up putting in. Any one out there who have had their S63's serviced and can provide an insight on what the dealer filled it up with?

off my Service papers.
also I had remembered that I had a bottle of Castrol 5W-30 from topping off a few months ago
it's also the same for the F01/F02 and I'd imagine the same for the F10(550i)

That's what the dealer used and it's what I used to top it off months ago, also you can find info for the oil in the manual on Pg 243.

The following is the only recommended and approved synthetic oil for BMW M (Motorsport) vehicles in the US market with gasoline engines, at the present time.

BMW Long-life rating LL-01 Synthetic Oils for BMW M vehicles equipped with S54, S62, S65 or S85 engines:

* Castrol TWS Motorsport SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Engine Oil
* Castrol Formula RS SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Engine Oil (BMW part number 07 51 0 009 420)

If Castrol High Performance Synthetic Oil is not available and you need to add oil between oil changes, only use synthetic oils with the following specifications for M vehicles:

* Viscosity - preferred SAE 10W-60
* Alternative - SAE 10W-40, SAE 5W-50 or SAE 10W-50

Use only oils with an API rating of SJ/CF, SK/CF or higher.

That's what I thought. M-line vehicle(Engine model start with "S" instead of "N") suppose to use the Castrol TWS 10w-60. On page 243 of the owner's manual, it only says that the 3.5i and the 5.0i use 5w-30. The X5M/X6M comes with the supplemental manual but it never mention what type of engine oil it use. I call the dealer and got different answer as well.

Maybe the only reason we are not getting a specific answer is that this motor is not a "high revving" motor and it does not require the "special oil"? I looked at the main manual (p243) several times it's a bit ambiguous. The main manual is a manual for both regular x5/6 and M so it's not like it's the wrong manual. But a lot of us are used to using the TWS for M cars and having the manual being specific on which oil to use. Just to add to the confusion, I have heard of dealers filling M cars with wrong oils before. It does happens. I am going to call BMW NA and see if I can find an answer when I get a chance.

Ok. It official....at least on my end. I just got my car back for the first oil service and it's filled with TWS 10w-60. My service advisor pulled it up on the computer and the service for this vehicle calls for the part number which is the TWS 10w-60 oil. He also confirmed it with his Tech and Parts Store Manager. I've checked so far with 3 other BMW parts store and they all said this beast uses the TWS 10w-60. It has been know for BMW techs to fill M's with wrong oil many times. Especially if your BMW center does not have a M tech. I would go back to your service advisor if your car was filled with anything but the TWS 10w-60.

Yes, I have the same results on my recent service. They list 10 quarts of the TWS Synthetic Oil part number 07-51-0-009-420. They also list an oil filter element set with a part number of 11-42-7-600-089.

This is great information, as I was going by the manual, which as stated must be for the 35i and 50i and not the M. This makes the oil change quite a bit more expensive, at least when you are eventually out of warranty. With this oil in there, the engine is very well protected in my mind.

The M division must have made some bearing clearance changes from the other engines to require this type of oil, or they are simply protecting the bearings more due to the higher loads experienced in this engine. I am used to seeing Ferrari's getting filled with 10w-60 oil from Shell. This is really something special, because these oils in these multi-grades are very high quality, no expense spared oils I would guess. Awesome MMMMM.

It amazes me how much BMW dealers are confused about M cars sometimes......

Now...the question is: When will Ryouken's car blow up

I was told by my dealership that the new engine in the X6 M did not use the high revving oil needed for the previous 10 cylinder M engines, and that the correct oil was indeed the 5W 30.

gotwish and novablackm3, can you have your dealers pull it up on the screen and show you? When I was getting my car serviced, the service adviser pulled up the workorder for the oil service on the screen and it showed the part number for the 10w-60w. Ask the service adviser to show it to you on screen. Again many dealers (sales and service) just don't know much about M. It pretty amazing and suprising.

5W-30 is the oil for the X5/6M engine.

It's a common misconception that the X5/6M uses the special 10w-60 oil for the M5/6 and M3 engines as people think with the M letter behind the X5/6 badge it will be using the same oil.

The 10w-60 oil is needed only for those cars because of the specially build nature and tolerance of those engines only, those high revving engines needs the thicker oil in order for the oil to stay on spinning parts longer to lubricant, if they use lighter oil the oil will get fling off too early.

The twin turbo V8 in the X5/6M starts life as a regular twin turbo V8 in BMW's range so they obviously uses the same oil as the regular car.

Because of the higher price of the special 10w-60, some dealers are known to 'spec' them for the higher profit margins, not knowing the thicken oil will harm the X5/6M engine in the long run when they can't pass through oil passages fast enough when hot.
In any case, they will blamed it on manufacturing defect if and when the engine fails as they are using 'BMW' motor oils.

i am trying my best to agree with you, but they specifically said to use 10W-60 from the dealers in Asia, or maybe they are different due to the different climates?

oh gosh, 5W-30 or 10W-60??

If you guys could wait, lol until November.... I decided to pick up mine at BMW Welt. I've always had mine at a local dealership so this time I'll actually ask those BMW peeps out there in Munich which viscosity it uses... Put them in a spot lol.
