Question about NAV update via USB

Hello,
Sorry to ask what may have been discussed, but I could not find a thread with an answer.
I am trying to update the NAV maps in my 2011 X5 via USB. I have everything I need, files, FSC and I actually managed to get thru all 3 folders, but after it got to 100% it asked me to put Drive 2 in again. I am struggling to get the process to complete without my car going into sleep mode. What is the correct process for keeping the car awake and processing for 45 minutes without leaving it running ?

Ken

Just hook up a battery tender and leave the door open. Or just leave the door open. If that don't work leave the key in.

Thanks for the information. Turns out all the data was already read, so all I had to do was insert the USB with each image. That didn't take to long so I didn't need to keep the car "on" too long in order to complete the upgrade.

LOL. I just drove for the duration, and pulled over as needed to change folders... A pretty lame idea actually. Or BMW should juts allow a single disc/tumbdrive with no folders needed work.

Do we have a DIY writeup or link to how this is done?? I'd like to update my X as I'm pretty sure it has the original software. Also, is this for the Nav firmware, or maps, or both? Perhaps something different altogether??

Someone educate the dumb guy!!

The trick for this to be a DIY, is to have the activationcode. The online reseller's that provide this, provide directions with it.
  1. Generally speaking 3x8GB thumbdrives or a single 32GB drive will do it.
  2. You download the needed update files.
  3. In the root of the drive is the contents of "disk1." with all other files in folders.
  4. When this is entered into the USB port in the glovebox, it prompts you for your activation key.
  5. Then reads/copies the contents of the thumbdrive.
  6. when it's 33% done, it'll tell you to enter in disc 2. In which you'll enter in the 2nd thumbdrive or just plug the thumbdrive into your computer and move some files around.
  7. Do the same when it asks for disc 3
  8. nav will reboot

That about does it. It's not hard, just time consuming.
You can't use a USB Harddrive, maybe if it were powered via 12V, it could be used, but the glovebox USB port can't power a USB HDD. Thus the requirement for thumbdrives.

Originally this was based on 3 DVD discs. So that is why you have to swap files within the folders.

Yeah I've posted a couple questions in his thread over on the X6 forum. I asked some general questions about what services he provided and what the costs were, but no response. He seems to PM members all the time, but I asked that he post publicly so everyone knew what he offered and the prices...

Anyway, thanks for the info.

The first time I did an update it was a pain waiting 7+ min to move the individual files after each time the USB completed. To speed up the process is I moved all three USB folders onto the USB drive. Then I moved just the 2 files from usb1 to the root and did the update, when it asked for USB2, I moved the files back to USB1 folder and moved the USB2 file to root and same for USB3. I reduced the time the update was taking place by almost 20 min. To me I would rather spend 30 seconds swapping the files i and out of folders instead of spending the time to load the USB.
