This is NOT a Recall.
Its a customer care package from BMW USA linked to a Service Bulletin (SIB).
So other countries may not have it yet or may never get it.

I hope they roll it out everywhere.

So I'm guessing information is not synchronized across all the systems. From all my previous experience, a good tech and SA will get you the latest info.

As mentioned before, its not a recall, so wont show up on recall searches.

Your SA should of said its a service action, but they usually dont know much about these things so just call it a recall.

Thats true, i found out about it early last month so i guess it will take some time.

Went in for an oil change....SA walked out with me and told me to expect a customer care email soon. Never mentioned the forum.....So I'll let him feel one up..........good guy though.....I trust him.....

I would say something should be happening. It's almost the same engine just a little bit tweaked with some differences http://australiancar.reviews/bmw_N63-S63.php

Sadly, there's a lot less exposure since there were only 4129 vehicules produced for North America.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe that

- the timing chain
- fuel injectors, mass air flow sensors, crankcase vent lines, battery, engine vacuum pump, low pressure fuel sensor
- change the oil service interval to 12 months/10,000 miles

are different on the X5M. To the contrary, they are more abused!

I spoke to BMW Portland yesterday and the SA confirmed that the S63 is NOT currently part of this "care package". Seems crazy, and I'm hopeful that they extend it to include the X5/6M, but....

Mine is in the shop too for a minor issue, but when I asked about the S63 getting lumped into this "recall", I got the same answer.

He said they need to show a failure or reproducible symptoms to BMW in order to replace the injectors...

Maybe BMW is using the N63 service as a test run and will include the S63 later if all is good ?

I gotta admit, I'm so happy BMW is stepping up to the plate on this one. I think it's BS they're not calling it a recall, but if I was in their shoes I might have done the same damn thing.

I've got my service scheduled for next week. I hope they replace every damn part under the sun that is covered by the bulletin. If this fixes all the nagging problems I've had with the X5 I feel like I'll be happy to keep owning and driving it. I've had it less than 2 years and have already had fleeting thoughts of trading it.

The crankcase ventilation is good news for me. I've been going through oil like crazy. Averaging 1 quart every month or 900 miles since about last April. I'm really hoping this fixes that too.

Its pretty disappointing to hear the S63 isn't or won't be included in this. I have a feeling they're basing the decisions on the volume of engines brought in for repairs. Of course, with so few S63 powered vehicles, we will never get the volume of repairs to generate the service bulletin/care package...

I'm just speculating, but still, bothers me a bit.

I think you hit the nail on the head. There's simply not enough owners to warrant a recall for the S63. I'd like to remain optimistic but trying to remain realistic at the same time.

Absolutely agree with you. The base components of the N63 and S63 are the same. In fact, the EFFECTED components are the same, so why wouldn't we be included...?!

While it's true that the AFFECTED components are the same in the N63 vs the S63, the CAUSE of the failures in the N63 appears to be related to the engine oil. So far my inexact research and discussions point to:
1. oil viscosity breakdown, caused by excessive heat generated by the twin-turbo design location in the V8 valley, and
2. low(er) oil pressures due to excessive oil consumption (not clear what causes the excessive oil consumption in the N63).

The S63 twin-turbo design (http://www.***********.com/showthrea...920#post141920) has two major design differences that may very well prevent pre-mature oil degradation and excessive turbo heat: The S63 has a different cooling system using a belt-driven mechanical pump. An additional oil cooler is used that is mounted below the radiator as well as a larger engine oil cooler. The water to air intercoolers on the S63 are also larger than those on the N63.

This campaign will now reset the new oil change interval for the N63 engine to 10K miles.

Does anyone know what the official oil change interval is for the S63, or maybe it doesn't matter, because the S63 engine simple runs cooler ...

i guess s63 owner has to pay out of their own pocket now.

I believe the oil change interval is 15,000. I seem to remember that showing up when i picked mine up at the PDC.

Mine has been in all week. Dropped off for battery issue before I even knew about the bulletin. Also, only my defroster was working while in auto which they can't find out why. 4 N63 have been bright in this week for the recall and one needed a new timing chain.

According to this http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=904184, it was 15 000 miles. Option 8KC Oil Service Interval

But I remember my SA telling me that I'm allowed of 1 per year in Canada

But also, in a vin checker, it tells me 8KC OELSERVICEINT. 24.000KM/24MONTHS

So who knows....
