I will admit that I am super lucky. My kids seem to have done well in the genetic lottery. They seem to have gotten the best from me and my wife (although my wife is perfect (don't judge, the Internet is forever.)) My son got great grades, was a competitive hockey player through Juniors and never ever got in trouble. Went to a good college, graduated (in 4 years) and got a job. Not stuck in adult-o-lescense. My daughter is 17 and she is the super-bright committed student and a great artist. She will have all options open to her. They are both bright, talented, good, honest, and caring people. I have been blessed and lucky. The only real problem is that my daughter as developed a serious disdain for any car under about $80K. Needs work on her money skills...

I know. It is a problem. Every time we drive around, she is like... I like that car.
"Jag F Type"
I like that car.
"C63"
I like that car.
"M6"
I like that car.
"Maserati Gran Tourismo"
I like that car.
"Bentley GT"

It's like... yeah, you're not getting one of those. Possibly not ever... many people don't. Unless you go work hard in school.

That's actually really cute. LOL.

If they made the C63 in a manual (LOL), I would go buy one of those instead.

Ugh. I know this well.

My daughter has ridden as a passenger on our spirited drives in the following:

Audi R8 V10, McLaren P1, McLaren MP4-12C, McLaren MPR-12C LeMans Edition, BMW M6 (Mine), BMW M6 GC, Dodge Viper ACR, Porsche 911 Turbo S, Ferrari 430, Porsche 911 (997) and a Maserati GT. Oh, and a BMW i8.

I love her being around good and financially successful people all of the time and she has had amazing conversations with top executives in multiple industries as well as self-made entrepreneurs. That said, the level of expectation can be tough to manage so I keep her grounded by driving my old company car...a 2012 Ford Fusion for school.

Thanks. Those are very kind words.

Now back to OT...

As long as you don't leave a peanut butter spoon on the coffee table, I'm an amazing father. If this happens, all bets are off.

Crap, not the peanut butter spoon.

Sometimes I eat PB out the jar. But I wash off the utensils. I also try not to eat too much of it.

Indeed. It takes a strong man to raise a daughter. Takes an even stronger one to raise a princess.

Same thing with a girl.

Kindness goes a long way and knowing that she is learning about men from you can never be forgotten.

Yeah, there has to be a balance in regard to those things. Times have changed a lot, I'm sure.

My daughter knows how tough my parents were on myself and my siblings. She is horrified when I tell her about our typical days.

Up and dressed with all chores done before being seated for breakfast at 7 am on weekends. No exceptions unless fever. Perfect attendance in school. Period end of story. Work first, everything else later. If you ever get in trouble with the law, you will rot in jail. We will not spend a dime on getting you out.

No excuses and no one will take care of you so you better take care of yourself.

On the flip side, I had summers in Europe and traveled extensively in the US. Very nice car when I graduated from HS and DP on my first home.

Standards, balance, rewards, and unconditional love. My parents.

sounds like u r doing a lot of things right
there has to be a purpose to being hard, because one day they will need to take care of themselves. but if it's pointless..
i dunno, my parents were all over the place, my brother, sister and i are so complete opposites u can say they suceeded in creating parenting diversity, but with the downside half of us will fail miserably..

the key is realizing what works, and what doesn't.. as doctor Phil said, but that's easy for him to say

My mother was honestly the foundation of my family, the strong arm and the enforcer. My dad was more like a brother, a friend.. not really providing the typical direction you'd expect from a head of household. My mother died when I was 15, so I lost my immediate guide from that point forward. Growing up a young man without his mother might not seem terrible to a lot of folks, but the weight she held in my life was immense, and I at first suffered without her because I was unable to establish an appropriate basis for my direction at that age. I am 25 now, turning 26 in May, and I feel as though I finally have total control over my life for the first time in 10 years since she passed.

So with regard to MKSixer and his rough upbringing, I'll take that any day over the alternative.
