I bet you will.

My comment obviously went over your head slightly, focus on the word 'keen', but don't comment.

The warranty can now be extended if it has expired, however, it is a fair bit more expensive.

I just sold my 335d on the BMW comprehensive extended warranty and was paying monthly. They were happy to transfer it to the new owner as I guess they just wanted to keep the business! I never needed to claim.

I would pay monthly until you sell then buyer can transfer, worked well for me.

Thanks for the advice, I have renewed the comprehensive warranty on a monthly basis.

Thanks

It used to be the case that once it expired you couldnt take it out but this isn't the case now.

It's £540ish for zero excess and emergency service, so I suspect it costs a bit more than if you renew. What was the renewal cost, OP?

My Insured Warranty letter from January 2011 clearly says

"Your BMW Insured Warranty is only available for purchase until 4 Feb 2011. After this date you will not be able to purchase a BMW Insured Warranty, so please don't delay.

Have they changed the rules since then?

I was also told that I could transfer the warranty even though I pay monthly.

No I have not actually put the car up for sale just yet.
I have been given a delivery date for my new car of mid June, therefore it will be up for sale late may/early June.

Anyone seriously looking for a 335i now or in the near future is welcome to come and look at the car. I'm happy to do a deal on the car but I cannot let it go too soon. I do minimal mileage, have extended the BMW comprehensive warranty and always keen my cars pristine, so it will continue to be looked after in any interim period.

Feel free to PM me if you want more details.
Thanks
Ritchie

This always used to be the rules but a year or more ago they apparently changed it.

http://www.bmw-warranty.co.uk

They will quote for a car without a warranty but it comes up saying you must own the car for 1 month before you can take out the policy. But other than that it certainly seems like they are prepared to sell your a policy even if its lapsed now.

It's odd what your letter says, though.

Would you mind telling us how much they quoted, and what the excess was? I wonder if there is a discount you get if it doesnt expire or something?

My car is just coming up to three years old and I got a letter just today about the extended warranty. It categorically says that if I do not buy by 1st May (three years from registration) then you will NOT be able to buy BMW extended warranty in the future.

That's rubbish..my manufacturer warranty ran out in October last year and i have just taken out a comprehensive extended warranty with BMW warranty last month. Have even received the confirmation letter and introduction pack through the post. I have the 320i petrol engine and yes i have the engine judder...i think time to make full use of my extended comprehensive cover later in the year.

OK, I'll phone BMW and tell them.

That's what it says on my letter - what am I, lying?

It used to be the case until recently, just do it on a monthly basis that way it doesn't increase when you hit 60k miles and if you don't let it lapse it is around £30 a month rather than £50 a month.

I'm not doing it at all - I'm handing it back to BMW. I'll bet when they resell it asan AUC car it will magically have warranty though.

Of course it will, the dealer has to put an AUC warranty on all cars.

It says, based on a 3 Series Coupe with 50,000 miles, an Excess of £100 and Full Emergency Service, (even though I only have 18000 miles):

Comprehensive: £39 per month
Named Component: £35
DriveLine £30

It would be a no-brainer if I was keeping the car.

Cool.

I emailed BMW about this and they confirmed you can take a warranty out if the car doesnt have one. It's interesting they are sending out letters saying you cant - I dont think you are lying at all, you are the second person I have seen say the same thing.

They also gave me prices for what they called the 'Lapsed' warranty product. For the same scenario, ie 50k miles, comp and £100 excess with Emergency Service, its..

£41 a month.

So it seems the 'renewal' price is only £20 or so a year less than the lapsed price.

Small price to pay for the peace of mind, IMHO.
