I really like the design. It's something like the Defender - timeless. If you've ever been in one, you'll know how truly vault-like the vehicle is. My buddy from work was cross-shopping one before buying a Range and the guy in the dealership kept telling him to slam the door as hard as he possibly could to show just how well it is built.

It's a unique vehicle, body style unchanged since the 1970s. I like it and applaud MB for keeping it around. The AMG version is badass, the side exhaust is too cool. Somehow I doubt it's bought for practicality.

I wouldn't buy it, but I might not pass up a stripped out military spec one with a manual transmission.

To add to what A4rings said, the GL, ML are there to compete with other luxury suv's. Mercedes was suppose to cancel making G class but strong demand made them change their mind. In reality, I'm pretty sure the high profit margin made them re consider

Many of you don't get what this car is. This is a true off-road car, unlike all the other useless all-sized suvs like X1, X3, X5, X6, GLK, GL, ML, Q3, Q5, Q7, Cayenne, Macan, Touareg, Tiguan,... and the list goes on and on. Suvs have no utility, they are neither big trucks nor luxury passenger cars but pretend to be off-roaders. These are ture off-road cars:
Toyota FJ Cruiser
Nissan Xterra
Jeep Wrangler
Land Rover Defender
Mercedes G Class

Among them the G Class is the most luxurious yet has true off-road capabilities. That is why it is so beloved.

You're are totally ignorant if you think the x5 can't perform off road and be luxurious.

^ I admit I've never tried these things off-road but I remember the TopGear test of the X6 which wasn't too good.

X6 != X5.

Also - that has high performance summer tires on it : P

You have to run the all-season Michelins if you really want to use the thing in low traction situations.

Right. That is what it means to be ignorant.

Has no one ever watched or been to performance center delivery? They take stock X5s off the factory floor and beat the crap out of them off-road.

Exterior still looks the same to me bar a few updates. Interior is well improved though. But I still wouldn't buy it! Give me an X6M or Cayenne Turbo over the G63 any day

You are ignorant. The X6 does have off-road capabilities, but if you really want to go off-road, it is not the right car. Just as the X6 M has good track performance, but if you really want to go to the track, it is not the right car. You youself brought the X5 as an off-road capable car, I am sure you don't know what you are talking about, eventhough you own it. If you really want to go off-road it need to be like this one:

Hartge X5 Hunter (E70)

Only so it is really capable, but unless you are an X5 fan, there are better cars for this purpose, just like there are better cars for straight line acceleration than a supercharged M3.

Yes I have seen the X cars at Performance center, and I have seen M3's on the N-Ring. Good, maybe very, but not the best. Fact.

WTB a coherent argument without backpedaling.

Make up your mind ignoramus.

I never said it was the best off-road vehicle. You said it was, "useless", then go on to say that it can be used off road, but it is not "the best". Which I never claimed it to be.

There are better cars for every specific purpose than ANY BMW available. That is the point - they make balanced cars that do a lot very well, and with a lot of optional luxury. They can do it on road and off, on road and on track.

No they don't, the GL isn't really a competitor to the Range Rover, it doesn't have the status.

The Touareg has true offroad abilities, if you order it with the offroad package, it will go into as many places as your list of true off-road cars. I noticed you missed a couple, the Range Rover, Land Rover Discovery, Nissan Patrol, Suzuki Vitara.
