Tailgate SLAM fix
When I purchased my X5 used, its rear hatch motors were pretty worn and the tailgate would SLAM shut with force, I thought it was just due to wear. It always bothered me however how unnecessary it was and not fitting for a BMW with soft close to slam the hell out of the rear hatch.
Fast forward to yesterday and I noticed this thread on the F15 formus: https://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1789147. So I am assuming this is not unique to my X5 and many other E70 owners are also having this issue since it was passed on to the F15. This fix applies to the E70 also. I used Protools to code but I am sure many of the other coding apps will work too. Took less then 5min to fix. Along the way I learned that the hexadecimal values are divided into 9 segments that each segment controls approx 10 degrees of motion. To fix just pull up the Tailgate ECU and find the DREHZAL_SEGMENT_SCHL entry and define the hexadecimal values you would like to use. Below are videos and pics of the before and after coding. You can adjust the values to whatever you prefer but I decided to slow down the rear hatch long before it latches in steps. Keep in mind its hexadecimal so use an online calculator to convert (example if you want a 20% closing speed at the last 10 degrees of movement before it latches, 20 in hex is 14. Also if you go too slow it can freak out the safety override as it thinks the hatch is stuck and will open back up. Here are the values I used: 10161E262E36404040 this translates to a transition of speed from 64% to 16% right before it latches. The stock speed was 64% all the way down to latch/close. THANK YOU! I saw the F15 post and messed around in ProTool and couldn't figure out the wert value to use or any specific number(s). I changed date "Data:01" to "Data:02" to see if it did anything, nope.. nothing I can tell.
Anyway, thanks!.. going to give this a shot next weekend. E70 is away this week getting a couple of mods done.

That's an excellent question there's a value right above that might control the opening speed I'll mess around with it and see what it does and report back.

I would first try adding the values I have listed exactly as I know those work and then from there you can experiment with different values for different closing speeds depending on your preference. If you slow it down too quickly I noticed it will trip the safety measures and it thinks the hatch is stuck or ran into something and will open back up so if you see that phenomenon just adjust it to be a little quicker or slow it down in steps. |

Thanks for the information!
On my vehicle I was able to fix(to my ears anyways/temporarily?) the slam issue by adjusting the receiving latches on both the bottom tailgate and the top tailgate. I moved them in, that is, towards the front of the vehicle. By doing that I believe that the tailgate is now hitting the rubber seal before the actual latch, when closing, and not causing the crashing noise. |

Just gotta say, you sir are a genius!!! Finally got a chance to code my X5M this past weekend with this tailgate adjustment and why the HELL did BMW not do this from the factory??? Man it closes so nice now and actually works like almost all the other SUV's on the market.

Get yourself a cheap tablet to keep in the car just for Protool. It’s worth it

Just did this and it worked exactly as stated. In ProTool you'll find it under [as of 26May2023]: Chassis>HKL Tailgate>Coding>Edit Coding>Expert>3020 Kinematik> DREHZAL_SEGMENT_SCHL
Sophisticated Redneck Thanks so much for your insight on this and many other areas

Cool but it's noticeably slower closing.

Excellent, thank you. Nice soft close now. I too hated the rear hatch slamming closed.
I coded the HKL with NCSexpert and edited the trace file with NCS Dummy creating a custom line under DREHZAL_SEGMENT_SCHL. Values I used are 10,26,38,40,40,40,40,40. |

Has anyone tried a closing speed of 15? Next time I'm in there I'm going to try it.

I'm glad you brought this up, I just went in there and changed my code for a 20% drop at close, up from 16%. A little smoother to me, will try it out for a while. The coding menu location in Bimmergeeks ProTool changed since my last posting above, new location:
Chassis>HKL Tailgate>Coding>Edit Coding>Expert>3020 Kinematik>DREHZAL_SEGMENT_SCHL Custom Value = 14161E262E36404040 This custom value results in 64% for the first 10deg of motion, and 20% for last 10deg of motion.
