Update CIC Navgation Maps (USB Method)

Prerequisites:
- iStep Navigation (CIC/2009+) - this is a must, if you don't have iStep this won't work. To check to see if you have it, within navigation there should be a circle in the lower left corner with "i".
- Pull 1B Hex File from vehicle (Research this link: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showt...hlight=1b+file)
- FSC Code (process in link above as well)
- USB (large enough to house the massive files, I use 128GB to be safe) - Formatted in FAT32
- Download maps to USB (took about 5-7 hrs for me to download the maps...)

I used this site as reference, but the attachments didnt really work for me. Must've been corrupt files:

https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1461515

First - 1B Hex File
Download this and extract to your desktop in a folder.
https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1461515

- Extract those files to your USB
- Start vehicle up
- Let navigation system fully load
- Insert USB into glovebox port
- Wait 30-60 seconds, then remove USB
- Plug USB back into your laptop, there should be a new file in there labeled 1b.hex

Download the CIC Generator:
https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1453464

- Extract the generator directly to your desktop
- Upon extract you should see a few files automatically pop up - RSA Keys and Lookup.xml
- Wait until those files appear before opening the generator application
- Open generator
- Browse for the 1b.hex file that was created
- Once it loads into the generator, you should be able to select Map Type: PREMIUM
- Region: NORTH AMERICA
- Maps: ROAD MAPS NORTH AMERICA PREMIUM (USB) 2019
- Check lifetime code
- Select generate
- This will reveal your FSC code! Save this code, write it down or take a picture

2020 North American Maps:
https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1654612
Massive file, so it will take a long time to download. Took me about 7 hours. Don't let the computer go to sleep.

Once complete 'extract all' directly into the USB (obviously make sure the USB can handle at least 18GBs).
- Make sure the USB is formatted to FAT32 (properties)

- Start vehicle up
- Let navigation system fully load
- Make sure it is in non-split view/screen mode. (scroll to right to uncheck split screen)
- Plug in USB into glovebox port (might be able to use center console port)
- Scroll all the way to the right in navigation, scroll to the bottom until you see 'Navigation Version' - DO NOT click into it.
- Navigate back to the main navigation view.
- Push down on the CIC knob
- Wait a second and you should be prompted to update maps
- Enter in FSC code
- Update should take about an hour (I just drove around while it updated, do not turn the car off during the update)
- Once it is complete, the system will ask you to restart the system. Select Yes/OK
- Wait for it to reboot, Done

Sounds promising, but all the links are broken (except e90post thread 1461515)

Hmm, sorry about that. They are older links. Let me see if I can find some more recent ones. Or if you shoot me your email I can send over.

Success! Just loaded the 2020 maps. A few notes:

The links I used were:

1b file:
https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1461515

2020 Maps:
https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1654612

FSC Generator:
https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1453464
https://ufile.io/nj2ttwoc

For loading the maps onto the USB drive, there should be a "pkgdb" folder and a "config.nfm" file - I accidentally extracted one file directory higher, and it didn't work at first. If you plug the USB drive in before you start the car, it automatically prompts for an update.

After you start the update, can you then start the the ignition and drive while it updates? Or does it need to stay ON with a trickle charger? I have the FSC code generated and the 2020 maps are (slowly) downloading onto the USB, so uploading into the car is my next step.

You can drive while it updates in the background. You can check the download progress in the navigation options (when you scroll to the right and bottom - once it’s processing). I drove an hour while it was updating.

I have a 12A battery charger, so I just hooked that up and left the car sitting. It did take about an hour. Apparently I started out with a fairly discharged battery in the x5 because at one point the car started shutting things down and wouldn't stay "on" very long, but turns out if you start the car back up it will restart the installation where it left off, so no "bricking" worries!

I installed the maps on my 2011 e90 as well, starting with a fresh battery, and just used a normal trickle charger, and it worked perfectly!

Just updated my maps today, 2013 to 2020 North American, this process is a lot easier then it seems. Thanks for the links and thank you to the original posters who gave the original information and help.

Processes very very easy. Just seems daunting when in reality its download maps, pull your fsc code and thats it.

Similar Question - The first Post states "2009+".... 2009 to ?
I have a 2012 LCI model with original maps... Will this work on mine?
I'll have to check if I too have the "iStep" nav.

* EDIT * Ok after a little research I read that "In 2012 BMW updated the CIC iDrive to CIC-HIGH. The update improved the processor speeds, memory, maps, and hard drive capacity."
Might still work?

Found that at this interesting link:

2009+ means LCI model vehicles. You’re 2012 would fall into that category.

Update to the latest maps via USB!

Question, the 2020 Map zip file is only 197kb, which doesn't match what I've been reading in this thread about how massive the file is supposed to be. Do I have the right file?

"Road Map North America PREMIUM (USB) 2020-1.torrent" found here: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1654612

That is the torrent file. You use it in a torrent client to download the actual file.

Another question...My 128GB drive only offers exFAT and NTFS formats. I tried with exFAT, and as expected, no joy. I was about to use a third party to format to FAT32, but read FAT32 isn't supposed to work with files over 4GB, which these are...

UPDATE 6/14:
1. I used this freeware to reformat my 128GB Samsung USB to FAT32: http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/ind...?guiformat.htm
2. If you don't have one, you'll need to download a Torrent Client, I used WebTorrent: https://webtorrent.io/
3. Before downloading the maps, using the torrent file and client, edit preferences to download the files to a location on your computer (not the cloud, WinRAR below doesn't recognize cloud drives)
4. The Torrent Client places *.rar files on your computer. These are compressed. Download WinRAR: https://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
5. Using WinRAR, extract these *.rar map files to a folder on your PC. NOTE, these five files extract into the same name folder. So you need to rename the folder after each extraction IE: xxx_USB1, xxx_USB2, etc.
6. The extracted 2020 Map files total 26.7GB per folder, there are Qty.5 folders, you need a drive that can handle at least 134GB or two or more drives, formatted to FAT32 as per Step 1 above.
7. From the xxx_USB1 folder copy ONLY the "pkgdb" folder and a "config.nfm" file to the root of your USB drive.

UPDATE 6/15:
I tried to use two 128GB USB drives. Inserted the first USB and all went well. However it never stopped and asked me for a second USB. It downloaded 100% in an hour, said upload complete, select OK. My NAV version is updated to 2020, however two folders were never installed. I will follow daniel717 post below, purchase new USB drives, and update again. I had no issues using 128GB USB drive formatted as above to FAT32 to successfully pull my hex file.

FINAL UPDATE 6/18:
Ok, from the post below, I now understand that even though 5 folders were downloaded from the torrent file I confirmed they are just 4 copies of the same folder. So the USB only needs one folder of data whose contents are the config file and pkgdb folder which totals 26.7gb. The folder contents should be saved to the root of the USB drive. As a result of the above info my system was updated to 2020 version. Thanks for all the info and help.

Much easier to just use a 32GB USB and format to the specified FAT32. You can use a larger usb, but as you can see, you need a method to format it. I'm pretty sure it still needs to be partitioned to 32GB to pull the file. Also, in order to successfully pull the 1b.hex file, the USB needs a full fat32 format, not just a quick format.

Most office stores offer a 32GB usb for less than $15. Save the headache and just get a 32GB drive.

Just used 32GB drive with the first folder content. Vehicle doesn't recognize it as 1 of 5, it just uploaded the entire folder and said UPDATED, press OK.

What am I missing?
