Probably because they had already taken the decision to ditch the progressive/innovative 4 door hatch 6er and this concept had become irrelevant in that it didn't announce anything real to come on the market. I suspect they also were just about to ditch the inverted grilles idea and this concept-car had them and therefore had an irrelevant identity (although at that time (2009) Scott26 was still saying that the next 1er Coupe would have them... His latest sketch of the 2er (2012) has normal grilles though). In any case some last minute decision (product strategy, design direction...) seems to have withheld the presentation of this red concept-car.

One thing I appreciate most about BMW is their apparent willingness to go from concept to production without making super dramatic changes. I can recall when Chevrolet aimed to re-release the Camero a few years ago... The concept was at the LA autoshow and was used in the Transformer movie... it was COOL looking... then, the following year the production car was introduced and the first thing I noticed was how different the cool little stuff was... like the rearview mirrors and fog lamps...

The NAZCA was not an official BMW Concept it was Guigaro and ITALDESIGNs interpretation of a BMW sports car based on the E31 8er. At its early nineties Geneva premiere no one from BMW paid any attention.

I would definitely like to have an R8 in the stable as well, but this BMW Render looks like it could be used as a Daily Driver. I Would not use the R8 as a DD, lol.... not like I can afford one at this time anyway.
Now that you mention it, I wonder if an R8 was used as a the "skeleton" for this render... What makes me drool over this BMW Render is the sculpted hood along with the coupe fastback and the wide stance those tires give it. As long as it wasn't too small in build/scale, I would take one of those home any day!!

That was indeed an R8/M3 chop rendering.

Cool to see just how close the i8 was. I also missed the floating C pillar carrying over from the m1 homage.
