'06 M5 or 2010 X5M
which one and why?
I used to have the '06 M5 but gave it up as kids came along. Now I am looking to acquire either the M5 or X5 M. The M5 has about 50K on it and the X5M has about 55K. |

X5M- e60 m5 is really dated looking. The x5m began production the year the e60 m5 went out of production. More you can do with a twin turbo v8 then a v10 too.

I had an 08 M5 and replaced it with a11 X5 50i. Not an M but similar to what you are considering. I say X5M. More space, all season use, tows if needed, real world normal driving "daily" faster and more fun....TORQUE! Cheaper to tune with greater gains by tune alone.

The e60 M5 almost feels like the ugly stepchild IMO. If you really want to get back into an M5, I'd look for a well-documented e39. Tons of things you can do to it, lots of info out there on what can go wrong, and a very, very strong user community - see M5Board.com for examples. Check out enthusiastauto.com for some outstanding (and pricey) examples.
That said.....if I was in your shoes I'd go with the X5 M. Much more flexible in terms of when you can drive it and cargo space.

Post the same thread over at M5Board and every body will tell you e60. If you go e60 do not get anything less than 08-10. You will have less issues. I have had both and love both, nothing will ever come close to the exhaust note of the V10, and a car that will do over 200 mph is impressive.
My kids liked the M5 more.

Some of you guys are crazy to think the E60 M5 looks dated. If anything the lineup in order based on looks would be E39, F10 then E60 IMHO but that's primarily because after Bangle was out the styling went back to traditional.
I really don't get this thread OP. You had an M5 before. Got rid of it because of kids. And now you are asking whether you should consider it or an X5? Why would you consider the M5 again? |

We have the X5M for my wife to drive, and the back seat is spacious compared to the E60 rear bench. We have three car seats across in the X5M too (two are still rear facing even) - that would be somewhat more difficult in the E60.
With that said I have a CTS-V for myself and face similar problems to what you would face with kids in the back of an E60, and I make it work. If car seats are a concern, there are narrow seats from Diono that work well. It also gives me the opportunity to torch M5s in a station wagon with little hands waving from the back seat. |

Lets say that back then we went from two people earning a wage to one. Now its back to two. I would not have an issuw with two car seats in the back of the M5. I have never own nor driven the X5M.

How about taking that second wage and putting it towards an appreciating asset rather than a depreciating one. I only say that because I see it all too often people over extending themselves to own an M car when they could be making better financial decisions. I'm not saying this is your case but if your income alone can't afford it, it's probably not a good idea.
I personally owned a few M cars in my past and frankly there a lot better things in life than being strapped to a lofty monthly payment and a high maintenance vehicle. Of course everyone's financial positions are different... |

My brother laughs at me when I express how practical the X is compared to the 5. But if it's performance, utility, space and comfort you want than there's no debate IMO. Of course when the kids are gone, this will all change. Just my .02, hope it helps. |

2012 M5. You should be able to get one for low 60s CPO'd.
The prospect of the X5M's front axle breaking and blowing up the drive-train might be too much of a risk at this point. Really upset with the approach by BMW not involving the S63 in any recalls. M/// is a separate division, we are told. Meanwhile, the injectors, transfer box/case and front axle are not M/// parts... they are BMW parts used on all N63 X5's. They are on the brink of losing a customer, not that they will care. Last edited by StatenEye; 06-15-2015 at 12:23 PM.. |

The transfer case is only used in the x5m, x6m and x6 50i.. the one of the x5 50i is different. The front differential is just used in the x5m and x6m..
Only standart part is the driveshaft, so don't worry... |

though one, but I don't think these two cars are comparable. It's a sports truck vs a V10 sports sedan....different purposes.
