question to X5 owners or anyone: a used x5?
Well, I took a look at the xbimmers forums and saw how many of the members there were just members here
Here's the situation: My dad wants to buy a used 01-02 X5 from a friend of his. It has around 40k+ miles on it. It has been driven very lightly, no accidents, and no past problems. My dad can get it for around $18k. I have no experiences or knowledge of BMW's X5. So I was wondering what some of you guys and gals think? Is it really worth it? My biggest concern is the maintence on the vechicle...I understand it's an older model and it has low miles on it, but I seriously think that maintence is going to be a bia...inputs please. |

Depends if its a 3.0 or 4.X... I know the bigger engine X5's had problems, but nothing that would of already been taken care of by the dealership. I have a 2003 X5 3.0 and it drives amazingly smooth. Tell your dad to ask for all maintenance records and pay the extra cash to have a dealership to inspect it.

The price depends on the engine. I have an 01 4.4i back home with about 50,000 miles...it still runs like a champ every time I go home and drive it. Never had a problem with it.
Maintenance will be more expensive on the 4.4i, but it's to be expected. There are actually a lot of resource out there for that engine (as it was shared on the 540i, 740i/iL). But then, maintenance is always expensive on just about any BMW...the 3.0 isn't cheap to run either . As for the price, if it's a 4.4i, that's a great price. If it's a 3.0i, I'd say that's an about average price . Good luck.

I drive a 2002 X5 with only 37K on it. Have ALL my paperwork. Wouldn't your dad's friend have same? In that low mileage arena, there are not many service calls and not many oil changes for that matter. Our 2005 X5 only has 22K on it. Same story. Both as good as new.
