This might be from the latch of the tailgate.
Or the trunk lid. Check this out. "http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/x5-e70-forum/83922-tailgate-rattle-noise.html" goodluck! |

From my own experience: didn't fully lock in place one side of my rear seats when I lifted them back up from the folded position. The seat rattled slightly when road bumps were encountered and from the driver's seat sounded like it was coming from trunk area.

Try the plastic trim surrounding the inside tailgate glass (I think its a three piece section). I have added double sided tape on the connecting sections plus padded where I could so that there is no possible movement.
I also put grease on the locking mechanism and striker. I also made sure that the roller cover does not move at all. I have absolutely no rattles now. Super solid car. Its amazing how a few little rattles can upset the whole feel of the car. |

Funny thing the mechanic at the dealership had to actally ride in the "trunk" area with me driving at a good clip to figure it out. He couldn't figure it by just sitting in the rear seat! |

I actually didn't figure it out till I noticed one of my rear seat-belts was caught behind the seat preventing it from completely retracting into place. When I corrected the issue and snap the seat back is when that "click" clicked my brain. And sure enough when I drove, no more noises. |

Exactly...I just took some electrical tape and wrapped the hook and it went away...dead silent now. That little squeak was driving me insane.

Ironically, this morning I noticed a "buzz" in the rear somewhere-turns out its the cross piece for the panoramic sunroof-has anyone ever had this happen? Not sure if I can actually adhere this to anything yet.
