Diagnostic tool
///M (42K miles) misfired and went into limp mode. Turned it off/on and runs fine until I get on it. My Indy's (retired) scan tool did not find any codes. Drove 70 miles to the BMW only to find out Misfire cyl 1/3 > replacing the plugs next step.
Plugs not covered under BMW extended service plan I am bit bummed as I could have saved myself the time and the diagnostic cost at the dealer What do you all recommend as to a diagnostic tool that works on a 2012 X5M as well as a 2007 530i? Thanks |

Foxwell nt510 or higher with BMW software loaded, can find on Amazon. Or bimmer geeks protools. Both are excellent and will allow you to read BMW specific codes as well as reset adaptations, program new injectors, etc

I use the Bimmer Geeks cable with ISTA+ software. It also has some testing procedures, shop manual info, adaption reset capabilities and so on.

I'll be setting up ista+ for myself today, with a laptop.. but for the average person, protool is the way yo go. It's got a user interface that makes it easy, rather than having to work the real bmw diagnostic software.

Looked at the Protool demo on the YT seems pretty simple. Few questions if you all can answer until I get them straight from them
Are Licenses (diagnostic or Coding) vehicle specific or can they be used for other BMW's I own too? I was planning on getting an Iphone in next few days, is this system just android base and how do you solve that problem? Can you register/code the battery with this tool? Thanks |

The Protool license is not vehicle specific or locked to a particular vin. It can be used on a variety of BMWs which is one of the best features about it. Check the website for a list of all compatible platforms.
I haven’t checked the website lately but I’m pretty sure it is android based only. I bought a cheap tablet that I have dedicated to my car. (Protool and MHD) Yep, no problem registering the battery |
