The big and powerful SUV market is extremely lucrative with very few players. So BMW as business would be dumb to not take part of the share.

The X5/6 M are relatively simple UPGRADES from the base models, unlike the M3, which required a REDESIGN of over 70% of the components of the regular 3 series. BMW simply put in better turbos, revised some x-drive programs, and redesigned the bumpers and wheels. That's it! And with such little work they came up with SUVs that will bring BMW into a completely different niche market, namely the market dominated by the Cayenne Turbo/Turbo S.

I do share some people's concern that turbo charged SUVs are not M badge worthy... But hey, if this is going to allow BMW to make more money and reinvest the profit into better "true" M cars, why not?

Just my 2 cents.

No matter what mantel fanboys put them in, BMW is in the business of pursuing profits. Sure the ///M badge may seem diluted for some, I am all for the financial success of the ///M Division.
After all, if not for the Cayenne, great affordable Porsches such as the Boxster and Cayman would not have existed.
