It may be just from the rotors those hubs are aluminum so they should not rust. Maybe what you saw was iron runoff after a wash staining the hubs. But if they changed alloys then who knows, if they have impurities in the aluminum that's no good.

I did see a used X5M in the lot and it's rotors looked fine just normal aluminum oxidation so who knows.

One idea is to have the rotor hats clear powder coated and that way you keep the elements off of them, the brake dust is acidic so it will affect the aluminum over time. Same reason if you don't clean your rims the brake dust will damage your wheel finish.
