Sounds like this could have been a measure to preserve valve seals, as I generally prefer to leave stock temp units in modern vehicles, and let the ecu do what it expects to do.
Well mine sits in the middle of 1/4 and 1/2 and I live in hot ass AZ when temps here hit 110 degrees easily. I was towing my 17ft camper and the highest it got going uphills was 1/2 during the towing
