It's possible the last piece is your problem, since the signal from paddles has to travel through it.
I was really surprised the paddles worked for the OP. I even asked him for the VIN of his car, since that could help me figure out what specific parts he had installed at the factory, but he never responded.
(I have a 05/11 production 35i and would like to get paddles, but I have wheel heater and lane departure, which makes the configuration pretty unique and difficult to source parts for.)
