The only difference I can see is the A3/B4 designation of the more expensive oil, but not sure what that means for our X5Ms.

The one on the left has the correct 'High Strength High Shear" properties necessary, the one on the right ..such as what you would find in Costco does not....ACEA A3/B3 is what you need to look for or BMW LL01 although I now use:

Total Quartz INEO MC3 5w30 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil.

APPLICATIONS
TOTAL QUARTZ INEO MC3 5W-30 is synthetic Low SAPS engine oil specially formulated to meet the technical requirements of vehicles manufactured by BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Hyundai-Kia.

TOTAL QUARTZ INEO MC3 5W-30 complies with the latest ACEA and API international standards and meets the requirements of the most demanding automobile manufacturers.

This 5W-30 grade lubricant is suitable for the most severe conditions of use (sports driving, repeated start-ups, city and motorway driving).

Its special formulation resists the most extreme variations in operating temperature.”
