I finally tracked down what looks like a definitive answer to which engine the U.S. X5 35d has. It's the M57, but unlike the single-turbo version sold elsewhere, the U.S. version has the sequential twin turbo (but not variable geometry like the N57). My source is from the X5 press kit spec sheet, which I found at http://www.bmwusanews.com/download.do?id=146 . Read across the line the says "Engine." So my earlier "I'm confused..." post was wrong. SkipSauls' post above makes a lot of sense, but the explanation that we still have the 6-speed because the M57 wasn't designed to work with the 8-speed may not be right. The X5 30d for sale in Europe (which appears to be M57, but I've been wrong before...) comes with the 8-speed.
