I also believe that 8 spd. will be standard on 2012. It's 8spd in Europe and across the entire x5 lineup so why wouldn't it in the U.S. x5 diesel. I believe that they didn't update the 2011 diesel like gas versions because of either new 4.0d U.S. emissions issues, or they wanted to use up excess 6spd. inventory and/or 3.5d engines. 3rd possiblity is that they didn't want to new diesel sales to take away from the LCI gas sales. Either way, I am most convinced that it will have 8spd as it doesn't make sense not to standardize the entire product line.
